Or trying to feel good about ourselves by pointing out that our neighbours are in a worse off condition. Given the human potential of South Asia, things could have been a lot, lot better. Someone called this the sub-continent of 'Sub-Saharan Asia' (apparently, many human development indicators on both sides of the border are worse than those of sub-saharan Africa!) Recently, India Today (or, was it Outlook?) did a cover story on how the Indian educated middle-class was fleeing the region, in unprecedented numbers, in order to get access to a better quality of life. It's little consolation if the Pakistanis are doing the same too... perhaps in larger numbers. Five decades after not having the colonizer around, we have yet to vanquish enemies like poverty, hunger, illiteracy and malnutrition. (Regardless of the stereotypes, are we aware of the levels of anaemia and malnutrition among women even in a supposedly 'doing-well' state like Goa?) Check out the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-2) for the reality.
