GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS March 03, 2003
CARNIVAL: THOUSANDS THRONG MARGAO: A sea of humanity descended on the State's commercial capital, Margao, to watch the colourful presentation of carnival floats this evening (March 2). A record number of 56 floats participated in the competition, which culminated at the Municipal square where King Momo Basilio Soares pronounced his decree of enjoying his rule of three days in the true spirit of Goan culture and tradition. As the floats moved through the streets of Margao with the participants dancing to the tune of lively music, the surging spectators lustily greeted them. People were seen clinging to the smallest space available in the nearest buildings such as the Rangavi building, Costa Pereira building and the Margao Municipal building to have a clear look at the floats. The presence of some foreigners was also seen both among the spectators as well as the participants in the floats. (http://oherald.com/newherald/newsGN.asp?qId=529&qSec=GN&qNType=R)
"KING" GETS A BAD DEAL: King Momo and his entourage had to bask in the sun for more than an hour due to delayed arrival of the power minister to flag off the floats in MargaoKing Momo might be ruling the next three days, however, he was made to walk almost half-a-kilometer to get in his car, while the ministers and collector's cars were allowed near the dais. PRIZED CATCH ELUDES TRAWLERS: There were 26 trawlers operating from the Talpona jetty in Poinguinim, but a visit to the jetty revealed that except for two trawlers, only two are venturing into the sea while the rest have been anchored since the past three months. And the reason as to why they have anchored is because of poor catch. Some of the trawler owners disclosed that they can reap in profits if they catch abundant prawns, pomfrets or kingfish but this season the prized catch eluded their nets and instead, mackerels, sardines and other fish of not much market value landed in their nets. IMPENDING WATER CRISIS: "On paper there is a lot of fresh water available in Goa. But in reality, the fresh water resources are highly stressed. Efficiently guided by the Chief Minister, the State government has already understood the gravity of the situation and the work on mini weirs is in full swing to mitigate the serious water crisis expected to hit the consumers for the next hundred daysThe situation may turn very critical this year because of natural and man-made factors. The rainfall was much below normal." (Nandkumar Kamat in Glimpses-NT)
PARSEKAR TO BE CABINET MINISTER? The chances of Bharatiya Janata Party state president and Mandrem MLA Laxmikant Parsekar being elevated to the position of Cabinet minister cannot be ruled out after completion of his tenure as the president. (GT)
PENHA-DA-FRANCA OPPOSES MERGER: The Penha-da-Franca panchayat has unanimously resolved to oppose any merger of the village with the Panjim Municipality. Following a notification by the State government inviting suggestions or objections to the Panaji Municipal Corporation, Penha-da-Franca Sarpanch Umesh Phadte convened a special panchayat meeting recently to discuss the issue. The panchayat objected to the proposed inclusion of the Penha-da-Franca village on grounds that the merger would deprive villagers of the benefits of the RDA scheme, while there would be a substantial hike in house tax which would be beyond the capacity of the common man. "GREEN" SCHEMES: A solar-powered on-site organic digester to convert waste into manure and biomethanation to convert it into energy. De-Super Heater to tap exhausts from air-conditioners for heating tap water. And a system to treat waste water for re-use. These are some of the "green" and power-saving new technologies, which were presented a t a seminar last week and which the State government, the industry and the private sector is looking at seriously. (GT)
DGP PATS HIMSELF: In a swansong article written in Konkani and English in the police newsletter Director General of Police Gurucharan Singh Sandhu has expressed satisfaction about his success in enthusing fellow police men into starting innovative practices in policing. He has also highlighted the 'realistic' approach adopted by the chief minister when it came to sensitivities of police matters. However, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar in a very realistic and practical message published in the newsletter has reiterated that the police personnel need to behave with people in a decent manner. VISHNU WAGH'S PLAY: Vishnu Surya Wagh's "Bhavya Maticha Manus" ( Son of the saffron soil) is unabashed in it's intentions. No scope for jibes, feigns, or testing prods at the Rashtriya Swyamsevak Sangh, simply a clenched fist crunching home. The play, which has surprisingly maintained a low profile despite it's hard-hitting content, was staged in a rather modest ambience at Mandur-Dongri. It is dramatist, editor and politician (in the order suggested) portly Vishnu's own punch on the solar plexus of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and the hardcore Hindtuva bandwagon. (Mayabhushan Nagvenkar in Herald)
KAKODKAR AT GU CONVENTION: Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) chief, Dr Anil Kakodkar, will be the chief guest at the Goa University's 15th annual convocation ceremony slated for March 4 at the Kala Academy at 10 am. CREATING WEALTH OUT OF MINING ORE WASTE (3): "Much of the debate after Liberation of Goa about the impact of mining on the ecosystem has centered on the waste material. In fact, there is hardly any geological publication which does not refer to the overburdenthe lateritic waste. A general formula to calculate the overburden is two to one. That is to get one MT of the iron ore, two MT of the overburden needs to be excavated. Physiochemical, X-ray and AAS analysis of this overburden has shown it to be rich in aluminium, silica and low in iron oxide content. That makes it economically unattractive and a non-feasible material." (Nandkumar Kamat in Zest-NT)
