ST XAVIER'S College in Mapusa is organising a workshop on 'rainwater
harvesting' at the college hall on March 8, 2003 at 2.30 pm. It is being
conducted by Director of Chennai's Rain Centre Sekhar Raghavan. You're
invited!

About two-thirds of the earth's surface is covered by
water. Not incidentally, the human body consists of about
60% water: for many invertebrates and plants the
water content is much higher. About 94% of water is
found in the oceans, almost 5.9779% is located
underground whereas rivers, lakes, soil mosture and
atmospheric vapour, which constitute the major source of
drinking water account for 0.0221% of the total volume.

It is estimated that 48 countries will face water shortages
by the end of 2025. Including India. Due to the
enormous growth of population and the pollutin of water,
freshwater has become scarce. Even rainwater will not
fill this gap, because 90% of the water
from rainfall will run through to rivers and oceans.

No proper planning is done to store this water and make
it available for use in the future. Merely storing of
this water in dams, reservoirs, ponds will not increase
the water level in the ground.

All efforts should be made to see that water will seep
into the ground and thus increase the ground water level.

Keeping this in consideration, the RAIN CENTRE at
Chennai has taken up the work of harvesting rainwater
for domestic use, and the excess water thus available
will be allowed to seep into the ground to increase
        the groundwater level.

The features of the Rain Centre at Chennai include:
a model for rooftop harvesting, surface run-off
harvesting and poster panels on case studies, live
RWH models and screening of RWH films.

The Rain Centre has installed rainwater harvesting in
Tamil Nadu Government buildings, public sector units,
colleges and in individual residential buildings.

Do come to hear all about it at Xavier's on Saturday. (*)
