CURTORCARES ORGANISE ONE DAY SOCCER FESTIVAL.
To mark the National Day of Kuwait on 25th of last month, Curtorcares United - Kuwait, organised one day soccer tournament at Sour Grounds under the auspices of Kuwait Indian Foot-ball Federation. In all 15 Indian soccer teams participated. The proceedings started at 8.00 in the morning and the final of the tournament was played at 1.25 between United Friends Circle (UFC) and Kerala Challengers; UFC won the final in a tie breaker with 2-1 score. The tie breaker was resorted because during the regular time the score remained at 0-0. Though exhausted yet both the teams dished out fair brand of soccer in which Goan lads had upper hand throughout the play where their forward Jose Rod tried hard but two of his attempts proved futile, one stopped by the Kerala keeper while the second went over the bar. Izaj their swift footed forward who is having great distinction of playing at Sour Grounds since last so many years with the same style of dribbling even four defenders with ease with a magnetic touch to the ball tried hard but lost control of the ball at last. Kerala lads though enjoyed good support from the holiday crowd who felt as the guests of Goans Kerala should carry the day yet they were denied chances to score by the defensive wall erected by Goan defensive lads propped up by safe keeping by Olavo under their bar.
For especial invitees a beautiful Tent was erected on one side of the ground where one could witness number of familes attending the festival, such scenes are rare now - a - days at Sour Grounds, this type of scenes were very prevalent in the inception year of our soccer at Sour Grounds in 1979 and lasting for another 5 -6 years and then later on faded away. All those seated on luxurious sofas in the Tent were served with cold drinks and snacks by the organisers.
Before the start of the match, the Chief Guest Fr. Donald Fernandes - Principal of Don Bosco's School in Kuwait and the Guest of Honour Mr. John Paul the owner of Red Rose Restaurant and a philantropist along with the presidents of participating teams were introduced to both the teams. During the introducing ceremony the players were handed with multi-coloured balloons which they released in the air of course to the delight of the spectators mainly the children who enjoyed this scene very much.
Before the start of the final, draw for the Raffle organised by Curtorcares was conducted in the presence of the spectators and especial invitees seated in the Tent. First Prize - 30 grms Gold Buiscuit went to Elroy son of Hilton Pinto(Assolna)a popular figure amongst Goans in Kuwait; Second Prize 20 grms. Gold Buiscuit went to Hari Desouza and the Third Prize 10 grms Gold Buiscuit went to Lawry Pinto yet another popular figure at sour Grounds & the president of Youth Recreation (Rising Stars). 4th: 21" T.V. Set Panasonic to Alex Taylo. 5th: Micro Owen to Patricia Desouza: 6th:Dinner Set to Moses Samuel. Besides, other 10 consolation prizes were also given.
The entire proceedings of the tournament were supervised by the referees attached to Kuwait Indian Foot-ball Federation and the final was refereed by John Luis who was assisted on the lines by Pillay and Dileep.
During the prize distribution ceremony, the compeering of was done by Merwyn Pereira. The prizes were distributed as follows:
Winners Trophy to UFC by John Paul
Runners-up Trophy to Kerala Challengers by Fr. Donald.
Winners individual trophies were distributed by Mr. Subu the finance manager of NGEECO - Siemens.
Runners - up individual trophies were distributed by Olinda Rebello e Dias - the wife of the president of Curtorcares United Mr. Salvador Dias.
Highest scorers of the tournament by Frankie Sequeira the president of Bombay Boys to Jose Rod and Ijaz
Best Player - Man of the match - to Olavo the keeper of UFC.
Best Discipline Team Trophy went to United Goans Centre.
1st Scorer of the final: Agnelo of UFC.
Best Defender of Final: Najeed Mohd. of Kerala Challengers.
Last scorer of Final: Sarto Batista.
Winners and Runners-up were presented with special Siemens Telephone Sets.
Best Coach of winners: Sarto Batista.
Best Coach of Runners-up: Vinay of Kerala Challengers.
Doctor of the Field: Hipolito Fernandes of UFC and Lawrence Rodrigues of Santos.
Best supporter of Curtorcares: John Travasso.
