I have been reading Mr. Rui Collaco's rabid India-bashing postings with a growing sense of irritation. My brother has just returned from a six month study in Lisbon and he loved the place. But the one thing that irritated him most was the 'Uncle Tom' attitude of many of the goans living there. While our portuguese friends love Goa/India, a large number of our friends/relatives of goan descent take great pleasure in denigrating everything Indian, much like Mr Collaco. One of Portugal's leading architects was down in Goa last month. After a short tour of Goa's most commercial beaches( Baga, Calangute, Candolim) he told us over dinner that he'd rather buy a plane ticket to Goa and spend a day or two here rather than spend a week in the Algarve or coast of Spain. I wonder why he plans to come back very soon eventhough Goa has no 'electricity, motorways or chilled beer'. Please remember that in fifty odd years of its existence, India has manged to transform itself into a world acknowledged technological powerhouse, while Portugal after centuries of its exploitation, loot and plunder of Asia, Africa and S. America is still known only for its sugary sweet dessert wines and perenially underachieving football team. And pray please tell us ignorant/uncultured goans of the 'Pleasures of European life' that you enjoy and of which we've never heard of.
