Zubin Mehta drops in at charity cricket match By Subhash K. Jha, Indo-Asian News Service (Byline mandatory) Mumbai, Mar 30 (IANS) For melody queen Lata Mangeshkar, a cricket match played here to raise money for a hospital in her father's memory proved doubly beneficial. Not only was the event a huge success but Mangeshkar was pleasantly surprised when maestro Zubin Mehta unexpectedly dropped in for a brief chat. "It was quite a surprise and a pleasant one at that. He had his concert on Saturday but dropped in specially to meet me. We had never met before though I had attended his concerts abroad. When I heard he wanted to meet me I was very happy," said Mangeshkar. "We didn't get a chance to sit down together. We spoke for a while and then he left. It was a memorable meeting for me," she added. But the day-night match played Saturday left Mangeshkar, fondly referred to as India's nightingale, fatigued. "It was tiring but ultimately very satisfying," she said on the morning after the event. The match, played between and Indian XI and a Sri Lankan XI was telecast live. The two captains, Sachin Tendulkar and Arjuna Ranatunga, were flown in by helicopter. "Shah Rukh Khan came for the match, even though he isn't supposed to step out of his home after (his recent) surgery. He tossed the coin. "Though this was a charity match both the teams played the game very seriously," the singer maintained. Mangeshkar, an avid cricket buff, stayed to watch the match from the toss to the trophy-giving ceremony despite her frail health. "I love cricket and our cricketers. Although they had just returned from South Africa they all came and gave the match their best shot," said Mangeshkar. --Indo-Asian News Service _______________________________________________ Goanet mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.goanet.org/mailman/listinfo/goanet
