Hi Vivian,

Apparently water harvesting is NEWS -- for WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY --
June 5th

Today's Economic Times on page 3 -- this article "For India Inc., green's a
mission now" speaks of the success of UTV's corporate social responsibility
unit, SHARE -- Society to Heal, Aid, Restore and Educate -- together with
Ion Exchange with Mumbai's Rotary Clubs and Sophia College Ex-Stuidents
Association to convert Raigad District into an eco-tourism location because
of successful water harvesting

A couple of days back there was an article where a Forest Officer by
building small dams across streams and shallow pits (like our rice paddies)
has made one of our Wildlife Reserves far more comfortable for the wild life
living therein -- no need to go miles in search of water

In many co-op housing societies in Mumbai tanks are being built in the
compounds to store rain water and / or replenish ground water reserves --
similar efforts have been successfully made in Delhi

I was wondering whether the fact that today many of our paddy fields remain
un-cultivated is a factor contributing to diminishing of ground water --
remember that rain water collected in these paddies and slowly flowed
ff -- there was enough time for water to percolate into the ground --
now with fields lying fallow from year to year and no small "bunds" every
twenty / thirty feet water does not get a chance to stay around long enough
to soak into the ground and replenish our stock of ground water.

In a recent message you mentioned that you have retired from U S A and
settled in Goa -- good move

Cheers

Aloysius
