Alongside the many shades of traditional blues and jazz selections, for which BluesWorks is known, will be "Malaika," a song written by Kenyan Fadhili Williams that was popularized in the West by South Africa's Miriam Makeba. Judy is a second-generation East African. She first heard "Gracias a la Vida," written by Chilean folk singer Violeta Parra, sung by Joan Baez when she was immersed in American folk music in the early 70s. Paying tribute to her ancestral land, Goa, Judy will perform for the first time her composition "Hanv Saiba…Blues" that is based on a traditional Goan folk song. The Goan Musical Society in Great Britain commissioned the composition that was performed at a festival in London. "Songs of Change and Promise" will also include original blues by Judy and her partner Paul Watson. Musicians featured will be Paul Watson (harmonica, mandolin), Judy Luis-Watson (piano), Mark Puryear (guitar), Jaamin' Tempo (percussion), Andra Faye - of Saffire: The Uppity Blues Women (violin), and Gil Vaz - formerly of the Jazz Swingers (percussion). Lead vocals will be shared and vocal harmonies will be colorfully textured. Come and experience a musical journey that covers thousands of miles, from Tanzania in East Africa to Goa in India, to Canada, Chilé, Cuba, and the U.S. The Prince George's County Library System will present the concert at the Largo-Kettering Branch Library, 9601 Capital Lane on Sunday, June 8 at 3 PM. Free.
