KONKANI IS CORE OF GOAN IDENTITY: MEET: The Gomant Bharati Sammelan, a convention of Goan diaspora in the country, made it clear that that Konkani is the core of the Goan identity. Vinayak Khedekar, former secretary, Kala Academy, and a known staunch Maharastrawadi addressed the gathering during the cultural session on Saturday evening, in Konkani. Damu Kenkre, founder member secretary and director of Kala Academy, however, disagreed, and pointed out that culture is never static and that leading Goan artist Mukibai Kaldekar to Kesarbai Kerkar to Gaitonde (painter) to Remo, all had developed on the Goan groups and assimilated the culture of other places without forgetting their roots. GKA chief Pundalik Naik who chaired the session on culture and noted Konkani poet Manoharrai Sardesai also reiterated that Goan identity was rooted in the Konkani language. George Menezes and Dinar Tarcar were the moderators for the question answer session. The chief minister was participating in a question-answer session. Prominent among those present were Cortalim MLA (UGDP), Mathany Saldanha and former chief minister, Shashikala Kakodkar. The sammelan was co-ordinated by Pramod Shetye, Anil Tendulkar and Dinar Tarcar among others. Chief Secretary Dev Singh Negi inaugurated the Sammelan in the presence of General (retired) Sunit Rodrigues, Sammelan convenor Dinar Bhatkar, Chandrakant Keni and Jagdish Wagh. NRI Cell chairman Chandrakant Keni welcomed the gathering, while Sammelan convenor Dinar Bhatkar later proposed the vote of thanks. (H)
RESOURCES FOR NRGS: CM Manohar Parrikar yesterday stated that the government intents to utilise the resources for non-resident Goans (NRGs) in the overall development of the State and put the wheels of economy on the right tracks. For this he banked on human resources of the Goan diaspora scattered in the country, he added, at the Rajiv Kala Mandir, Ponda, yesterday. (WE-GT)
NON-RESIDENT GOANS URGE BJP GOVT TO IMPROVE TOURISM: The non-resident Goans, who participated in the day-long Gomant Bharati Sammelan held at Ponda, have called for good governance, strong tourism, augmented industry and improvement in education and health care in the state�General Sunith Rodrigues termed the event as historic as it was a dream-come-dream event. He said that it was important that the people of the common origin had come together to exchange their views on vital topics. Education, industry and tourism in Goa were discussed in various sessions of the conference with various intellectuals calling for improvement in the same. SELAULIM BOTANICAL PARK: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar has said that services of five major corporations such as Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC), Economic Development Corporation (EDC), GFDC, Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) and KVIC will be effectively utilised to achieve all-round development of the state. He was speaking as the chief guest after laying the foundation stone for the proposed Rs 15.47 crore botanical garden-cum-eco recreational park at the Salaulim Dam site on the occasion of Goa Statehood Day . CLOSURE OF CHANDEL WATER PROJECT: The Pernem MLA and Congress Legislature Party (CLP) spokesperson, Mr Jeetendra Deshprabhu said that Pernem taluka has found itself in a major crisis because of limited or no drinking water supply, due to the forced closure of Chandel Water Works since the morning of May 31. "The treatment plant at Chandel Water Works could not be operated as no water from Kal or Kalna river, which is drawn to support the entire need of water of the Pernem taluka, was available," he added. The present capacity of the plant is 15 MLD. (NT)
'TRADING OF MOTHERLAND' SHOULD STOP, SAYS KENI: The senior journalist and noted writer, Mr Chandrakant Keni, said that environmental pollution, unlimited tourism and non-Goans settling in Goa in large numbers are the major problems, which the state would be facing in the near future. Mr Keni who was presenting his views during a debate on the topic Goem Rajyachi Bhashik ani Rajaki Bunyad, the linguistic and political foundation of Goa state, organised by Konkan Times in the city, further observed, "the foundation of Goa's statehood is based on the Konkani language and any harm to it would do irreversible damage to the state." WOES OF KERAL'S KUDUMBI COMMUNITY: The conclave of illustrious Goans at the Gomant Bharati Sammelan (GBS) was also attended by a few little known exceptions. The members of Kudumbi community who had migrated from Goa to Kerala fearing religious prosecution were today the odd ones out. Clad in lungis and shirts as compared to the well-dressed sons of soil the group led by practising lawyer, Mr O S Ramakrishnan, nurtured high hopes from their Goa visit while anxiously waiting for the chief minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar. "We are also Kunbi community members though called as Kudumbi in Kerala. In Goa they have given reservation for the community members. We want reservation in Kerala. We expect Mr Parrikar to talk to the Union government as the Kerala chief minister will not listen to us," explained Mr Ramakrishnan. (Rupesh Samant in NT)
'NO PLANS TO SHIFT DABOLIM NAVAL BASE': The Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Madhavendra Singh has asserted that there is no possibility of shifting the naval base from Dabolim to Sea Bird near Karwar in Karnataka. He made the statement while speaking to reporters after reviewing the Naval Academy's passing out parade at the INS Mandovi Saturday morning at Verem. Replying to questions on the demand for shifting the naval base from Goa, the naval chief explained that the Sea Bird base does not have a spacious runway like the one available at Dabolim. Sea Bird, he said, is basically meant for anchoring naval ships. He pointed out that sufficient time slot was being given for civilian aircraft at Dabolim but the same was not being utilised fully. This year, Sattari taluka has been blessed by more than 100% increase in the yield of cashew crops, for the first time in two decades. The bumper cashew crop has kept everyone busy farmers, factory owners, unemployed youth and even Valpoi police, given the number of illegal activities directly or indirectly related to the cashew crop. HOUSES TO REPAIRED UNDER GOVT SCHEME: Bhoma-Adcolna sarpanch Pradip Naik has assured that as many as 107 houses will be repaired while seven houses will be built under the 'Pradhanmantri Gramin Awas Yojna'. Announcing this that the recent gram sabha, the sarpanch informed that the respective files to the works have been sent to the government and that, the beneficiaries would avail of this facility shortly. ALDONA-CORJUEM BRIDGE: If the foundation stone for the long awaited Aldona-Corjuem bridge, laid on the auspicious Goa Statehood Day, was a special moment for residents in and around Aldona, they were in for yet another pleasant surprise. Union Minister of State for Surface Transport and National Highways Shripad Naik assured them that the island of Corjuem could well be linked with Aldona four months ahead of schedule. He was addressing a gathering on Friday afternoon, after laying the foundation stone for the Aldona-Corjuem bridge in the presence of Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and Power Minister Digambar Kamat. COMPREHENSIVE SYSTEM OF EDUCATION: Goa should focus not only on quality education but also nurture the culture of education, pointed out speakers and educationists at the Gomant Bharati Sammelan held at Rajiv Kala Mandir, Ponda on Saturday. Representing State Education Secretary, Ashwini Kumar, said prosperity of a nation cannot come in the absence of human advancement and hence quality education is must for human development. Education is proof of human development, he said adding the Government of Goa was doing the same�"With a literacy rate of Goa is 82.32 per cent, Goa ranks third in the country in the file of education. Nevertheless Goa has to cross the mark of 95 per cent inorder to compete with the developed nations on the education front," he said. (H)
RAPE ACCUSED REMAND EXTENDED: The Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), B D Divekar ordered that the five accused in the alleged gang-rape of a student of Government Art college, be remanded to judicial custody upto June 6 even as the Additional Sessions Court will pronounce its judgement on the bail applications on Monday. The JMFC felt that as investigation has reached a crucial stage, it would not be right to grant bail as accused may temper with evidence. He noted that Vishal Dhuri and Norman could have been permitted to answer their remaining papers by remanding them to judicial custody and then they could be sent to judicial custody. (H)
BENAULIM PANCHAYAT TO DISCUSS GARBAGE WOES: The Benaulim panchayat has convened a special meeting in late June to discuss a host of issues, including the garbage problem, encroachments on open spaces, illegal operation of a scrap yard and other illegalities in the village. The decision to convene the special meeting came in the wake of a strong demand by the Opposition at the monthly meeting held on May 29. (H)
