MONSOON LIKELY BY JUNE 14: The monsoons are likely to hit Goa on June 14 or 15, according to the Met office here (Panjim).The first signs of pre-monsoon showers are finally making their appearance in Goa, which is already facing a deficit of 23 cm of rainfall. According to K V Singh, Meteorologist, Government of India, monsoons are predicted to break in Goa on June 14 or 15, six days after reaching Kerala, which they did yesterday. Goa is already facing a deficit of almost 13 cm in the rainfall - as per the normal, from June 1 to June 9. (H)

WATER FLOW DRIES30 MINUTES AFTER CM INAUGURATES PROJECT: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar may have inaugurated the augmentation of water supply to Opa water works by pumping of water from Selaulim main canal to Kalay river at Shelpem on Sunday, but it seems that Opa is yet to benefit from the project. This is because at four places there is no pipeline and in other places, the welding work is still in progress. According to reliable sources, given the incomplete project work, water released from the Selaulim canal by the chief minister was stopped barely 30 minutes after the project was inaugurated.. (H)

FISHING BAN: The police and civil authorities are bracing up to seal the fishing jetties in the State from Tuesday as the ban on fishing by mechanised vessels and motorised canoes comes into effect from midnight. Meanwhile, the president of the Cutbona boat owners, J B Ferrao has said that the boat owners will abide by the High Court ban. (H)

SCHOOLS RE-OPEN IN GOA: The schools in the state re-opened yesterday&Around 1,267 primary schools, 443 middle schools and 367 secondary schools were opened for the academic year 2003-2004 from today, after 43 days of summer holiday. Around 2.30 lakh students are studying from Class I to X in the schools majority of which are managed by private trusts and organisations receiving government grants. (NT)

AFTER SELF IMMOLATION: A 45-year-old man attempted to commit suicide by self-immolation at his residence near the primary school at Khorlim-Mapusa on Monday evening. Neighbours noticed the fire in the residence of Gaurav Tukaram Phatak, but found the door locked from the inside. They alerted Mapusa police, who rushed to the site, broke open the door and noticed Gaurav engulfed in flames. Gaurav has been shifted to Goa Medical College Hospital at Bambolim in a critical condition. (H)

ONE DIES, TWO HURT: 27-year old Mr Ajay Sachidananda Singh succumbed to injuries after he crashed his Kawasaki Caliber motorcycle against an electric pole at Guirim around 11.30 p.m. on Sunday. The post-mortem report indicated that Mr Singh sustained severe damage to his liver, spleen, lungs and chest wall...At Porvorim, Mr Santosh Arjun Gawas, aged about 40 and resident of Ansabhat, Mapusa fractured his leg when a sand-laden mini-truck hit his Hero Honda motorcycle at around 3 p.m. today. SANDALWOOD SEIZED: The Panjim mobile squad of the Forest Department on Monday morning busted two places in Canacona taluka and seized 18 kgs of sandalwood powder and logs valued at about Rs 1.75 lakh. (H)

YOUNG US POLITICIANS' TEAM: A six-member team of young American politicians who are on a two-day visit to Goa held discussions with local politicians and bureaucrats yesterday over understanding the political system in the state. The team includes Mr Dan Roach, representative of Washington, Ms Lynette Boggs McDonald, council member of Las Vegas, Nevada; Mr Alex X Mooney Senator state of Maryland (Republicans); Ms Pamela B Gonzalez council member of Hayden, Arizona; Ms Jacqueline M Jackson council member of Richmond, Virginia and Mr Walter Burnett, Jr Alderman city of Chicago, Illinois (all democrats). Mr Brett Franklin, mayor city of Santa Ana, California and ACYPL representative, Mr Kenneth Insley are other members of the team. (NT)

NAVAL OFFICER FALLS FROM THIRD FLOOR: Mr Rajesh Kumar Mahadev (35), a naval personnel residing at naval quarters, Varuna Puri, Mangor Hill, Vasco died after falling from the third floor terrace. According to the police, the deceased was walking on the terrace with his wife and daughter last night, when he accidentally stepped into a one and half square metre hole on the terrace. He fell straight onto the ground. (NT)

DECOMPOSED BODY FOUND: Pernem police on Sunday evening recovered a decomposed male body in the Chapora river at Aroba-Dhargal. The deceased was later identified as Vasudev Rajaram Gadekar (40) of Sada-Vasco. Autopsy reports confirmed that death was due to drowning and police suspects it to be a case of suicide. (H)

IA REDUCES AIR TICKET FARES FOR GOANS: The Indian Airlines has reduced fares for the convenience of Goan community travelling to Gulf countries. These concessional fares are available for Indian Airlines flights, between Goa-Kuwait and Goa-Sarjah which are available on Mondays and Fridays as well as Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, respectively. According to a press note issued by the Indian Airlines, one way fare for Goa-Kuwait flight is Rs 11,290. With a one year validity, the return ticket will cost Rs 27,995 and a three months excursion fare will be Rs 24,595. On Goa-Sarjah route one way fare will be Rs 7,850 and the return ticket will be Rs 26,775. Three excursion fare will be Rs 17,205 and six month excursion fare will be Rs 23,475. These concessional fares are available on Indian Airlines flight between June 4 to 30, 2003. (NT)

INDIA, PORTUGAL HAVE A LOT TO SHARE: The Consul General of Portugal in Goa, Dr Miguel de Calheiros Velozo said that India and Portugal have a lot to share in terms of art, culture, economy and academics. Dr Velozo, who was addressing a gathering on the occasion of a special function organised by Fundacao Cidade de Lisboa, a Lisbon-based social and cultural organisation, in association with IPFS to celebrate the National Day of Portugal, in the city. SAO MATHIAS SARPANCH RESIGNS: In a sudden development, sarpanch of Sao Mathias (Divar) panchayat Domnic DSouza tendered his resignation on Sunday morning, taking his detractors and the entire village by surprise. (H)

NO-TRUST MOTION AGAINST SERAULIM SARPANCH: The Salcete Block Development Officer has convened a meeting of the Seraulim village panchayat to discuss the no-rust motion against sarpanch Gaspar Jose Inacio Vaz. The meeting has been fixed on June 11 at 11 in the morning. (H)

NGOS ACCOUNTABLE TO...: Should non-governmental organisations (NGOs) be accountable? Yes, by all means, but accountable only to those that set the NGOs up and to those who support them morally and financially, according to Padmashree Norma Alvares. Ms Alvares, who was one of the main speakers at a conclave to asses the role of NGOs, claimed that by no means are such voluntary organisations accountable to society at large. (H)

FRIDAY BALCAO: Friday Balcao the fortnightly discussion event to be held on June 13 will focus on the increase in crimes against women in Goa. The most recent incident of the 18-year-old student of the Goa College of Art who was drugged and gang-raped by her fellow students in the college premises was by no means the first incident of an atrocity against a woman this year.
