The suggestion to solve Goa and India and the world's water shortage problem (Australia during its recent heat wave, recently rationed water when its rivers ran dry) is a good one, but probably only in theory. In fact Zelma is in august company as President Abdul Kalam has mooted the same proposal last Independence day Aug-2002.
I suspect the reason the world has not opted for water desalination like Abu Dhabi is the cost of such a plant. Abu Dhabi does after all have the advantage of free unlimited oil energy to run these plants. Could Zelma at CMSEnergy come up with a simple costing of how much it would cost to produce potable water using oil at its market price of US$ 30 per bbl. If the Government of Goa or the village panchayat of Saligao could afford it surely they would then implement the CMS proposal. The only affordable alternative for Goa & the world is probably using practical methods to naturally re-charge the underground acquifers. Then we can like our fore-fathers draw it free from the well instead of paying anybody for it. The pessimist in me however suggests that we will eventually have to call in the desalination experts like CMS. The air-purification expert GS-GoldStar A/C of Korea is already in many Indian homes.
