TO ADMIT A STUDENT: Is it possible for a child to get admission in the same school where his admission was rejected because his pass percentage was not good enough? A few top schools in the major cities are receiving letters signed by the director of education directing them to admit some children. This is being done under section 110 of the Goa Education Rules which gives powers to the director of education to direct any school to admit the children listed in the letter and the school is duty bound to admit the children named by the director. Sources say that this is being done based on the recommendation of the local MLA. (H)
HOARDINGS AT KTC STAND TORN DOWN: In a major drive to clear the city from the white-board eye sore, the Corporation of the City of Panaji tore down 44 hoardings in and around the KTC stand and those in the adjoining areas. The operation began late on Monday night and continued till Tuesday evening despite heavy showers and strong pressures, protests and appeals from various companies on the corporation authorities. Commissioner of the Corporation of the City of Panaji Sanjit Rodrigues said that the hoardings were violating almost every rule particularly setback conditions specified for national highways. (H)
WOMEN PLACED IN MEN'S LOCK-UP: Two incidents of women being placed in the men's lock-up along with the men Have come to light with the victims alleging high-handedness and harassment by the Margao police. Three women, namely Ramabai Prabhudessai of Rivona, Neela Vernekar of Margao and Shaila Vernekar of Fatorda narrated their horrible experiences in the presence of GPCC president LuIzinho Faleiro and Santa Cruz MLA Victoria Fernandes. CM REFUTES EDUARDO'S ALLEGATION: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar yesterday refuted the allegation made by the lone Rajya Sabha MP from Goa, Mr Eduardo Faleiro over the implementation of the projects under the Member of Parliament Local Area Development Programme (MPLADP) saying it was based on half-baked knowledge. Mr Parrikar said the funds received from the central government are deposited in the nationalised bank and not at the government treasury as was alleged by Mr Faleiro. Only, when the fund is released in favour of executive engineers, they deposit it in the government treasury as per existing arrangements, he explained. (NT)
MGP CAN BE REVIVED: The Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party may appear to be in tatters but its new president, former MLA Pandurang Raut, thinks it is the first force, not even the second or the third. Sheer bravado, you may think, but Raut firmly believes there will be a turn-around in the party's fortunes. (GT)
HEALTH TOURISM: Dr Deepak Lawande was honoured by the income tax department of Karnataka and Goa with Samman Award for best tax payer in professional category for honestly paying the government its dues. Dr Lawande completed his MBBS from the Goa Medical College in the year 1973 and later on went to complete post graduation at the KEM and Wadia Hospitals in Mumbai. During his academic career, he was awarded two gold medals for his brilliance. Votary of health tourism in the state, Dr Lawande feels that health care facilities available here are much more better and cheaper compared to other states. "Private sector people can do wonders in health tourism in the state by providing the latest in healthcare," adds Dr Lawande. (Rupesh Samant in NT)
COPS LACK "HUMAN FACE": While condemning the risingincidents of crime against women, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president, Luizinho Faleiro, yesterday chastised the Goa police force for what he called lack of "human face" in dealing with grievances of women. "The treatment meted out to women at police stations is pathetic," Mr Faleiro said and alleged that in one particular case, a woman was forced to spend a night at the Margao police lock-up amid male prisoners. GOVERNOR, CM GREET GOANS ON REVOLUTION DAY: Governor Kidar Nath Sahani and Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar greeted Goans on the eve of Goa Revolution Day on Wednesday. Paying homage to the freedom fighters, especially Dr Ram Manohar Lohia, Mr Sahani attributed the success and progress that Goans enjoy today to the endeavours and sacrifices made by these brave people. The Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar in his message recalled the saga of struggle that the freedom fighters underwent, to achieve the ultimate goal of freedom. (H)
NEW HALT ON KRC TRACK: Konkan Railway authorities have decided to provide one minute halt for Verna-Mangalore passenger (KR1/KR2) at Chitrapur, a newly opened station between Mu4deshwar and Bhatkal. The new halt is scheduled to be effected from 21 June. (GT)
VENDORS WANT CHANGES: Vending activity is yet to begin at the newly constructed market complex of the Corporation of the City of Panaji even after the complex was inaugurated two weeks ago. The delay is basically due to a deadlock between the vendors and the Corporation of the City of Panaji, over the agreement drawn up to facilitate smooth transition. Herald understands that the vendors have expressed reservations about a couple of clauses in the draft agreement drawn up by the corporation and have sought rectifications before the shifting begins. TONNES OF FISH FROM OTHER STATES: According to information, wholesalers here has placed orders for around 10 tonnes of mackerals from TN. Ever since Goan fishing jetties lay sealed from last week, wholesale fish agents have turned to other States to bridge the huge gap in the demand and supply. While Tamil Nadu mackerals or sardines from Andra Pradesh along with the white promfret from Bengal on the Eastern coast steadily find their way in the market, fish has also arrived from States along the West coast, again raising the question of an uniform fishing ban to protect marine ecology. Tonnes of Bombay ducks from Mumbai and Gujarat made their presence in the local market in the last few days. Mackerals are believed to have been imported Kerala. Goa, unofficial figures say require around 80 to 100 tonnes of fish to cater to the domestic population and tourism industry. (H)
SUPPLEMTARY EXAMS FOR HSSC STUDENTS: The Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education has decided to hold supplementary examination for HSSC students in July. This supplementary examination will be only for candidates whose result reflects as "needs improvement" due to one subject only. Candidates who are unsuccessful in the theory or practical part of a subject will answer only that part in which they are declared as unsuccessful. (H)
NAPHTHA LEAKAGE PLUGGED: Timely intervention by the Zuari Industries Limited (ZIL) fire services succeeded in plugging a naphtha leakage at Baina early Tuesday morning. According to reports, the incident was first noticed by some doctors on duty at a private hospital. They alerted police, who in turn contacted ZIL officials. (H)
BAIL PLEASE IN GANG-RAPE CASE: The Additional Sessions Court has adjourned matter on bail applications filed by the five accused in the alleged gang rape following a request from the counsel of the accused. On June 16, it was submitted by the defence lawyer that the matter was adjourned at the High Court for orders at 4 pm and pressed for an adjournment till June 17. (H)
GARBAGE DISPOSAL DOMINATES BENAULIM P'YAT MEETING: Disposal of garbage in the coastal village of Benaulim took the centre stage again as carcasses of pigs lay dumped and unattended near dustbins. The garbage problem dominated the special meeting of the panchayat held on Tuesday morning with the body later deciding to hold a meeting on August 15. Initiating a discussion on the subject, former Sarpanch, Agnelo Fernandes sought to know from the Sarpanch, Carmelina Fernandes the plans chalked out by the panchayat to address the garbage menace. 60 ROUNDED UP: Curchorem police has rounded up as many as 60 persons in connection with the murder of a young housewife near the convent school at Cacora on Monday. Those rounded up for interrogation included migrant labourers, 17 painters who were painting the convent school building, some waiters and two ex-convicts. It may be recalled that Shobha Sham Wadkar (33) was brutally murdered, when she was fatally struck with a blunt object. The incident took place as she was alone in the house, since her husband, who is a talathi of Bhati village, went to work, while their two minor children went to school. (H)
BANK CHEATED: The Panaji Police have registered a case against the proprietor of Dolphin Tours and Travels on the charge of cheating the ICICI Bank, Panaji branch, to the tune of Rs.14 lakh. (GT)
ON MISPLACED PRIORITIES: "What is this news on June 8 of New Delhi talking about Goa being a venue for India's International Film Festival and the earlier news of the Goa government dispatching a delegation to Cannes with a view of replicating a smaller version of the Cannes Film Festival in Goa?...When there are deaths almost every day on the streets of Goa due to accidents, when people have to keep their house doors in the villages shut for fear of thefts and murders, when a number of young Goans are, like in Portuguese days, leaving Goa to seek employment in the rest of India and abroad, when prices of daily necessities are escalating and life in Goa generally is becoming difficult, the cheek of the central government and state government of transforming Goa into a Las Vegas or Pleasure Hunt... is highly shocking and therefore unacceptable." EXPLOITATION OR TRAINING? "The students of hotel management courses are sent on training for some months in five-star hotels so that they get some practical experience in the hotel industry. The intention is that the students should work in the food and beverage department, in the kitchen, front office or bar where they can put theory into practice. Unfortunately, these students are used by these hotels for menial work like cleaning rooms, utensils, lifting gunny bags and so on. Students have to do this type of work for 12 to 14 hours a day." CABRAL REFUTES: Reacting to allegations made by William Fernandes recently, the promoter of M/s William Beach Retreat Private Limited, Colva, Francis S Cabral, said that Fernandes lied to the press and the GPCC president Luizinho Faleiro gave a totally false information about the entire issue. (GT)

Following the complaint filed by 22 clubs that the elections to the managing committee of the Goa Football Association (GFA) are not being conducted in a fair manner, the Sports Minister, Mr Mickey Pacheco, has asked the Sports Authority of Goa (SAG) to issue a show cause notice to GFA why it should not be derecognised.
