HOMAGE TO MARTYRS: The Governor, Mr Kidar Nath Sahani said that though the nation is free from the colonial regime, the patriotism with which countless freedom fighters sacrificed themselves at the altar of freedom, should persist in the citizens of the country. "History never forgives those who tend to forget the sacrifices made for their country," he added. Mr Sahani was speaking at the Goa Revolution Day function held at Azad Maidan, in the city, to commemorate the clarion call given by Dr Ram Manohar Lohiya against the Portuguese rule, on June 18, 1946. ONLY 40% TEACHERS ARE EXPERIENCED: Teaching is an art and a vocation, it is said. But an assessment has shown that only about 40 per cent or less teachers in Goa have the knack and experience. A high ranking official in the government said about 40 per cent of all teachers, either government or in aided institutions, are found to be mediocre and rest are there by accident. (GT)
FRESH LAND SURVEY SOON: A blue print of all structures existing on land and underground will be captured on a map shortly with the government being seized with the task of commencing a fresh land survey for the entire State. The project cost will be to the tune of Rs.10 crore of which 50 per cent will be borne by the Central government. (GT)
ABUSE OF AUTHORITY: The Mapusa police yesterday registered an offence against the Police Inspector (PI) from Anti-Narcotics Cell, Mr Vincy Paes, for allegedly taking away Rs 3.95 lakh and mobile phone from an undertrial during a raid at his residence on March 11 at around 11.15 p.m. In a report submitted to the sub-divisional police officer, the investigating officer, Mr S C Tavares who is Mapusa PI said that the alleged accused while discharging his duty during the raid committed criminal misconduct by abusing his position and assaulted the complainant. The case was investigated following a complaint filed by Birender Kumar Shreshta, resident of Laximi Bar, Parra. (NT)

NO TRUST AGAINST ZILLA CHIEF: Instability has gripped the three-year old Zilla Panchayat, South as 12 of the total 20 members has served a notice of no confidence motion against Chairperson, Seema Sawant. Reacting to the development, the Chairperson said she would not step down from office and has preferred to instead face the no trust motion. From the opposition group, Nelly Rodrigues and Neelima Naik are reported to have staked claim for the august office. (H)
CAR STEREO LIFTERS: One gang of car stereo thieves with a taste for Pioneer music systems is on the prowl in Panaji, while another is making off with two-wheelers. Two cases of car stereo thefts were registered at Panaji police station yesterday, both the thefts took place on 18th June Road. (GT)
KERALA GANG: In a major breakthrough, the CID Crime Branch, succeeded in nabbing a Kerala-based gang which allegedly specialized in tampering with electrical meters, leading to massive pilferage of power. The alleged accused, Jaiman Joseph, Jobie Joseph, Girish Ravindran, Manoj RS and Jomie Mathew were all nabbed on 16 June by a CID team from a Margao hotel where they were staying. It is alleged that the gang sold their expertisein meter-tampering to a number of factories and industrial units. (GT)
COMPUTERISED LEARNERS LICENCES: The passing percentage of applicants answering the knowledge test for the purpose of procuring a learners licence on-line has risen in comparison to the manual testing system followed prior to May 26, 2003. In a period of less than 23 days, a total of 526 learners licences have been issued through two kiosks at the KTC bus stand, Panjim one operated by the RTO and the other by a Mahiti Ghar. (H)
FERRY TICKET COLLECTION: Privatisation of ticket-collection on ferry routes appears to be headed for troubled waters with one contractor on Chorao-Ribandar route abruptly giving up his contract. (GT)
ECONOMIC, SOCIAL FREEDOM: Goa Pradesh Congress Committee President Luizinho Faleiro cautioned Congressmen that we may have achieved political freedom but are yet to achieve economic freedom and social freedom, it is the secret duty and responsibility of every Congressmen to protect the secular fabric and communal amity in the State of Goa and in the country. Faleiro was speaking at a function held in Congress house to honour two Congress stalwarts on Goa Revolution Day. (H)
CASE AGAINST ANDERSONS: Verna police have registered an offence of criminal breach of trust by the directors of Anderson Marine for deducting provident fund amount from their employees but not depositing it in the fund. (GT)
HYBRID PADDY SEEDS: The Canacona Zonal Agriculture Office distributed 300 kgs of paddy seeds of hybrid variety costing about Rs 45,000 to more than 60 farmers who will cultivate 15 hectares of land. Besides, the Zonal Agriculture Office has distributed vegetable seeds to more than 200 farmers and the variety consists of Ridge Gourd, Bhendi (lady fingers) bitter gourd and Amaranthus, Fernandes added. COFFEE MACHINE THEFT: Margao police has registered a case against a 24-year-old man for lurking, tresspass and theft of a coffee and tea electronic machine along with pre-mixed coffee powder. The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday, according to complainant T Gurudath, after he had closed his shop, located near the district police headquarters, here, on Saturday evening. (H)
HIKE TO PALLI: The Youth Hostels Association of India, Margao unit will organise a day-long monsoon hike in Netravali village of Sanguem taluka. Hikers will hike Palli hills located in the mountain ranges of western ghats in Sanguem. SSC TOPPER FELICITATED: Advocate Atanasio Monteiro Trust felicitated top three SSCE students and persons of different vocations from St Cruz Constituency at a special function held recently. The felicitation coincided with the birthday celebrations of its founder Atanasio Monteiro. Elyskka Hedvig de Sa, Antariksh Naik and Rayson Botelho, who stood first second and third amongst SSCE students from St Cruz Constituency were feted by Victoria Fernandes, St Cruz MLA, Shantaram Naik and Nirmala Sawant respectively. Elyskha was also awarded a rolling trophy. Top Goan bands The Forefront, Alcatrazz, True Colors, Brothers In Arms and The Big Country Band will be in attendance. The highlight of the event will be the fancy Kopel and Pot breaking contest. The 4th traditional Sao Joao Bash will be celebrated on June 22, at Horizon Beach Resort, Velsao from 10 am onwards. Goa's top bands Status 4, Lynx and Rhythm and Blues will be in attendance. A brass band will also perform on the occasion. The highlights will include the Judeu competition and games by the pool. Goa Tourism Development Corporation Ltd (GTDC) is all set to start its maiden voyage celebrating Sao Joao on board Santa Monica on June 22. (H)
YOUTH IGNORANT OF FREEDOM FIGHTERS: Freedom fighters are a source of inspiration to the citizens but our younger generation is ignorant about these great people who struggled to gain freedom, observed Governor Kidar Nath Sahani speaking at a function organised to commemorate Goa Revolution Day at Azad Maidan on Wednesday morning. The Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said, the services of freedom fighters are still desired for further development of Goa. The President of All Goa Freedom Fighter Association Vasant Molio reprimanded the government for neglecting the interest of freedom fighters and their families. (H)
HEARING ADJOURNED: The hearing of bail applications of the five boys accused in the alleged gang rape of the fine arts students have been adjourned in the District and Sessions Court again on Wednesday. This is the third time this week the matter has been adjourned. (H)
ARRESTED ON SUSPICION: A Hubli resident who could not explain the presence of Rs 7 lakh in his possession is cooling his heels at the Margao police station. Police said the 29-year-old youth was seen moving suspiciously near the KTC bus stand in the wee hours of Wednesday. Upon questioning, the youth could not give satisfactory reply and as such, was arrested and booked under Section 41 of CrPC.. (H)
TEXT BOOKS UNVAILABLE: Even after 10 days of the reopening of the school, a large number of students in Canacona taluka are attending their classes without textbooks, as they are not available with the booksellers. The worst sufferers are Std VIII and Std IX students; and the main textbooks not available are History-Civics, Geography, Konkani and Science. (H)
BULL ELECTROCUTED: A bull was electrocuted at Tambosem village on Tuesday morning, when the animal brushed against an electricity pole in the field. In a police complaint, Dayanand Govind Gawandi of Tambosem said the incident took place while he was ploughing his field in the village. (H)
CHURCH-RUN SCHOOLS DO WELL: High Schools managed by the Diocesan Society of Education in Canacona topped the list of 14 high schools in the taluka in the recent SSC examination. St Theresa of Jesus High School achieved a pass percentage of 81.58 per cent, followed by St Anne's (Agonda) with 67.44 per cent and St Anthonys High School (Galjibaga) with 63.45 per cent. DSE schools achieved three of the nine distinctions, eight of a total of 36 first classes and 45 out of a total of 104 second classes. The four government schools in the taluka accounted for only 22.66 per cent of the overall 41.46 per cent in the taluka. (H)
