----------------------------------------------------------------------- Documented by Goa Desc Documentation Service & circulated by Goa Civic & Consumer Action Network (GOA CAN)<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Ph:2252660 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------- The Ragging Menace ---------------------------- The new academic term is starting in schools and colleges and it brings with it the menace of ragging. Students entering college or professional colleges have to contend with ragging.
Despite ragging being banned in colleges, it still continues. The students who carry out ragging are usually those who come to college to enjoy life, spend money without a care and trouble other students besides dabbling in politics. Some of them have connections in the right places and defy the authorities, bully the innocent and hard-working students and harm the sanctity of the very institutions they are expected to hold in high esteem.
Time and again there are complaints of ragging in the hostels of colleges. Ragging is a crime. The Anti-Ragging Act enacted by other states must also be followed by our government. As is the case, we begin to act only when a catastrophe befalls us.
The college authorities have to clamp down on ragging and take the help of the police if required. They can't expect the freshers to do it. How many students are bold enough to lodge complaints? Let it not be forgotten that a very serious incident had taken place in the Goa Medical College campus not long ago.
There are chances that the parents of the affected students might resort to other measures to get justice. The murderous attack on a student in a hostel of Bangalore University is a grim pointer to the extent to which the academic atmosphere has been vitiated.
