Konkani Tiatro �TUKAIM TENCH RAUTA�directed by Rafael de Majorda was staged at Hawally-Kuwait on 13th of this month under the auspices of Curtorcares United. This Tiatro was well attended by the Tiatro goers. Contrary to the expectations this tiatro did not rise to the occasion to fulfill the wishes of the attendees. Earlier two Tiatros of Rafael de Majorda were much better in all respects but this tiatro �Tukaim Tench Rauta� failed to satisfy the tastes of the audience. This is the second time according to tiatro goers that they were not given what their money and time worth � first time was when Jose Rod a year ago dished out poor performance tiatro and second time it was Rafael�s on 13th of this month. So much so, many of the attendees out of frustration left the hall much before the end of the show. The Mike system was full of defects due to which best part of the performance on the stage could not be grasped by the audience. Secondly loud Music was hampering the listening power of the audience. Thirdly the A/c system was not doing justice for the people attending the show. And fourthly the organizers and director failed to adhere to the timing, instead of 3.30 the show finally started at 4.40 and concluded after 10.00 p.m.
Since due to failure of Mike system I could not listen to much of what was performed on the stage I am unable to comment on the play. Regarding the songs most of the singers rendered them by holding mike in their hands and because of this one could easily absorb what have been sung. Among the songs, which deserve appreciation, are the ones rendered by Sanny de Quepem � on leadership. In this song Sanny showed lot of maturity of his knowledge on world affairs and world leaders. Such songs are rarely sung by our tiatrists. The other song that deserves compliments was the one sung by Rosary Ferns on �War on Iraq�. In this song Rosary showed his minute analysis of this war, which is very good for historical purposes. The third song that deserves compliments is the one, which was rendered by Baltazar Pontis somewhat in a forceful style of Kid Boxer criticising anti-Goan elements in Goa namely MGP & BJP parties and their followers. In this song he also described the mad rush for Portuguese Passports. Marcus Vaz rendered 2 solos one on directors and the other on Gang Rape. Felsy also rendered her opening solo on Gang Rape in Goa. Both the trios of Rosary-Sylvester-Sanny were liked by the people, one on Love at first sight leading to disaster. In this trio they cautioned the young girls to be careful before selecting their partners while the second was hard hitting to the one who in Kuwait introduced the fad �To Aslear Aum Nachona�. William de Curtorim�s all 3 solos were much below the level of what normally he does. Among the other visiting artistes Comedian Jesus Antao rendered a beautiful song on his village �Chinchinnim� and along with Sally and Querobina Carvalho played comedy roles. Querobina Carvalho known as comedy queen rendered a romantic solo �Savio � Savio�. Irene�s solo on Charismatic Movement holding Bible in her hand was praiseworthy. She also played the role of a mother. While commenting on this tiatro I must praise the excellent work Hilton Pinto from Assolna did in helping Rafael de Majorda to stage this tiatro. If it were not for the joint efforts of both Hilton and Rafael I doubt the tiatro would have been staged.
Generally speaking the directors and organizers must know that when they charge KD 5/- per person to attend the Tiatro then they make themselves duty bound to give something good. Denying the people the benefits of the money they spent is like a robbery and moreover keeping the people in the hall for lengthy hours without proper amenities in the hall is like punishing them which is nothing but a crime. Such crimes should be avoided as far as possible otherwise Konkani lover tiatro goers will stop patronizing this dwindling art of over 100 years old. It is said many times that Konkani people are not patronizing Konkani Tiatro. But if one observes carefully it is the tiatrists who are responsible for forcing the tiatro goers to boycott the tiatros. By staging �pochpochit� tiatros the directors, writers, singers and tiatrists make themselves responsible for killing tiatros. In Kuwait some of our elders were responsible for keeping this beautiful art alive till today but those who are not capable of doing justice to this art should not come forward to stage tiatro.
