24 KILLED IN KONKAN RAILWAY MISHAP: In the first major accident on the Konkan Railway network, 34 persons, including three children and four women, were killed and 25 others injured, 15 seriously, when four bogies of Karwar-Mumbai holiday special telescoped over the engine and derailed between Vaibhavwadi and Rajapur stations on Sunday (22 June) night. Eight of those killed have been identified as Sunil Chari from Panjim, Andrew Jackson D�Cruz from Margao, Sarita Sunil Gawas, Shreya Gawas (Goa), Sandra and Shawn, Chandrashekhar Rajashekhar Dalvi from Bangalore and Ramakant Rane, a police constable from Mumbai according to Sindhudurg police control. The injured have been admitted to hospitals in Kankavli and Oras in Sindhudurg district. To and fro services on the route have been suspended. (H)

LANDSLIDES NEW TO KANKAVLI: The landslide at Ankola and Sunday night�s incident leading to the tragic derailment between Viabhavwadi-Rajapur stations in Maharashtra is definitely a cause for concern, stated Konkan Railway Corporation, Director Operations & Commercial, Dr K K Gokhale. �These places were never earlier considered susceptible for landslides�, Gokhale asserted during an informal chat with newsmen at the Margao Railway Station here this evening. TRAGEDY STRIKES MUMBAI-BASED GOAN FAMILY: A four-member family rushing back to Mumbai to be in time for the SSC exams results were among the persons struck by a tragedy in the train derailment. The 40-year-old mother, Sandra D�Costa (40), and her 16-year-old son, Shawn were the two killed in the accident. Her two daughters, Jude (18) and Pavene (9), however, escaped with minor injuries. Sources said Sandra D�Costa (40) had come down to Goa on June 22 along with her three children to attend to the funeral of her father at Fatorda. (H)

CASUALTIES WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE: �Casualties would have been much more had I not been slow�, says C K Johnson, the driver of the ill-fated train. Speaking to Herald at the Trauma unit of the Goa Medical college hospital at Bambolim where he was admitted along with two others on Monday afternoon, Johnson said normally, the speed could be upto 110 kmph but on Sunday night, he was slow. �It was pouring heavily and hence I went slow�, he explained even as he was in pain. TRAINS CANCELLED, DIVERTED: The daily Konkan Kanya Express left for Mumbai from Margao on Monday evening via Londa, Miraj and Kalyan while the Railways announced the cancellation and diversions of several trains following the derailment of Holiday Special. The Konkan Kanya left Margao at 6 pm, but with a few passengers. However, a total of 12 trains have been cancelled while another four have been diverted on Monday. (H)

FILM SITES INSPECTION: The team from FICCI is scheduled to arrive in Goa by 5 July to inspect the sites shortlisted for hosting the International Film Festival next year. (GT)

THEATRES ARE POOR: The plight of theatres in Goa was witnessed by none other than Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar himself at the premier show of Konkani movie �Daulat� in the Panaji yesterday morning. Embarrassed by the overall �d�cor� in the theatre, Parrikar admitted that existing theatres in Goa need a facelift, perhaps even with support of the State government. (GT)

COMPULSORY PHYSICAL TRAINING FOR COPS: The Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar on Monday said that policemen upto the rank of police inspector would be sent for compulsory training to rid them of their inefficiency and lethargy. He said the policeman has to be fit to do his duty. �Policemen suffering from high pressure or diabetes will naturally go to sleep while on duty,� he commented. (H)

WOODEN BRIDGE COLLAPSES: The wooden footbridge providing access to Korjuvem from Aldona and Mapusa, which was constructed by Sinquerim villagers collapse due to floods arising out of heavy monsoon. The 50 metres long bridge was of vital importance to residents of Sinquerim, especially students and employed persons who preferred to cross the bridge rather than use a canoe. (GT)

GOEMBAB�S MARK ON KONKANI LITERATURE: Eminent writer and philosopher Prof Meera Kosambi, has said that Goembab has made a special mark on Goan Konkani literature and has uplifted Konkani which was earlier not recognised outside Goa. Prof Kosambi was speaking at the function of 125th birth anniversary of Shenoi Goembab, at Bicholim yesterday. (H)

SALINE WATER IN CORTALIM: The farmers of paddy fields of manos at Arvalem in Cortalim yesterday urged the Mormugao Mamlatdar, Anthony D�Souza, to intervene in the tampering of the sluice gates which has resulted in the flooding of their paddy fields. In a letter signed by over 50 farmers, they alleged that about a few days back one Manuel Silva and Joaquim Mour had been illegally fishing and tempering with the wooden planks and allowing saline water to enter in the paddy fields thereby destroying their paddy cultivation. INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST DRUGS: The Goa State Home Guards and Civil Defence organisation will hold a rally from Police Headquarters, Panjim to Calangute Beach and back on June 26, to commemorate �International Day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking�. The rally will be flagged off by the Director General of Police Seva Das, at 8 am from the police headquarters. (H)

NEW SARPANCH FOR SERAULIM: Seraulim village will have a new sarpanch on July 1. The Director of Panchayats, P M Borkar has convened a meeting of the panchayat on July 1 at 10.15 am to fill the vacant post of sarpanch. M A Nagarcekar, a senior officer in the Salcete Block Development Office will conduct the polls in the presence of BDO, Laura Britto. The elections has been necessitated following the ouster of then sarpanch, Gaspar Jose Inacio Vaz in a no-trust motion on June 11. (H)

PAY PARKING SOON IN PANJIM: The process for the �Pay and Park� proposal mooted by the erstwhile Panjim Municipal Council is expected to be completed by July-end and implemented thereafter by the Corporation of the City of Panaji. The Corporation received the green signal on the implementation of this proposal from its corporators at a meeting held on Monday evening. (H)

STABBING INCIDENT: In an incident reported near the Kadamba bus stand, Vasco, late on June 23, Someshwar, a cleaner of a truck, and Suresh Dhondu Singh Suryavanshi, a carpenter, got into an argument after coming out of a bar. Someshwar first bit Suryavanshi on the chest and did not let go. Suddenly, Suresh was stated to have removed a sharp instrument and stabbed Someshwar in the stomach. (NT)

TRIO NABBED: Verna police arrested three natives of Orissa, aged between 22 to 25 years, for allegedly stealing cash from a cash box of a temple, located at Zuari Nagar last night. PI Mohan Naik disclosed that the arrested youngsters � Kolandi Kumar, Santosh Behra and Santosh Kumar, were nabbed on receiving a tip off and has confessed of stealing cash from Venkatesh Balaji temple. SHOP ROBBED: Unknown culprits burgled an electronic shop belonging to Tarcar Trading Company at Shantinagar in Ponda on Sunday night. Goods worth Rs.70,000 were robbed from the shop. (GT)

AUCTION OF UNCLAIMED MOTORCYCLES: The Judicial Magistrate First Class, Sanguem, has urged the Collem police station incharge to auction the unclaimed motorcycles lying at the station for quite some time. The auction will be held on July 5 at 11 am at the Collem police Station. (NT)

KARNATAKA MOVE TO CUT EXCISE DUTY: The decision of the Karnataka government to drastically cut the excise duties on Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) is likely to spell doom to the Goan liquor industry and the tourism sector. The new rates will come into force from June 26 and the reduction in the excise duties have been brought down by 55 per cent. Everyday, liquor worth several lakhs is clandestinely smuggled to Karnataka from the Goan borders by land and sea routes and the first casualty will be the wine shops located at the State borders. RAIN-RELATED DISEASES: Consumption of contaminated water and change in weather has been the main causes of rain-related diseases like gastroenteritis commonly known as dysentery or diarrhoea and viral fever, affecting many people in Goa. (NT)

ASSAGAO WOMAN TO MARK 100 YEARS: At the stroke of midnight when families in the State are fast asleep, one family at Badem in Assagao-Bardez will be wide awake to usher in a special occasion of a special family member. For, Joana Joaquina Da Costa e Rodrigues will complete 100 years on Tuesday. Lovingly known as Leticia by family members, Joana was born at Sorvem vaddo in Guirim on June 24, 1903. She was the only daughter of parents, Deodato and Felicidade da Costa. She married Caitano S Rodrigues at Assagao on Valentine�s day on February 14, 1922 and the couple were blessed with three children, Gerald, Pulsin and Rita. (H)

VIVA SAO JOAO: Goa celebrates the feast of St John the Baptist in a unique, traditional manner, with young men with flower-crowns on their heads jumping in the village wells to the chant of �Viva Sao Joao�. Siolim, of course, is a special village which hosts a colourful boat parade coming up the tributary of the Chapora river, towards St Anthony�s church, where the entertainment programme is held. The programme starts at 2.30 pm today.
