BODIES BROUGHT TO GMC MORGUE: Bodies of the victims of the ill-fated KRC train, including five Goan passengers, were brought to the Goa Medical College morgue, Bambolim, yesterday due to lack of facilities near the accident site. (GT) THE SAILOR'S LAST JOURNEY: For 35-year-old Sunil D Chari of St Inez, a journey to obtain a document to upgrade his career proved to be the last one. Chari, who was working on a foreign ship as mechanical instructor was killed in the KRC train accident. He is survived by his wife Shweta and three-year-old son Tejas. Sunil had been working on ship for about seven years and was married two years ago. (GT) FACING STARK REALITY: For Shalaka Naik, one of the victims of rail tragedy of Sunday night, the relief from injuries is not an end of the trauma. As she gains consciousness and health, she would be forced to face the stark and unnerving reality of her life that her near and dear ones-her husband and only son aged 12--both have died in the ill-fated rail accident. (H) KRC PLANS TO INSTAL "RAIN GAUGES": Alarmed by the rail disaster near Kankavli, the Konkan Railway is planning to install rain gauges at "vulnerable spots". "We will be installing rain gauges at all vulnerable sports and if rains over 2.5 cm an hour was recorded then the drivers on the route would be asked to maintain a speed of 40 km per hour," said KR Managing director, Mr B Rajaram. (H) WOMAN HANGS TO DEATH: One Sharmila Sagar Bandekar (28) committed suicide by hanging herself to the roof of her residence at the sugar factory quarters in Dharbandora on Tuesday evening. Ponda police said Sharmila was married about three years ago and the motive behind the suicide is undetermined. (H) YOUTH FEARED DROWNED: Sao Joao revelries in Acoi-Mapusa ended in tragedy, when a youth was feared drowned in a creek on Tuesday evening. Mapusa police received a call that a youth, identified as one Alex, had gone for a swim as part of the Sao Joao festival and had gone missing. (H) CONFESSES TO 20 HOUSEBREAKING THEFTS: Felix Fernandes, who was arrested by the police, has allegedly confessed to 20 housebreaking thefts in South Goa. A motorbike, Sony handcam, mobile sets, wrist watches, cordless phone sets, mobile chips, all approximately worth above Rs.2 lakh have been recovered. (GT) DELAY IN PAYMENT OF RETIREMENT DUES: The Panjim Bench of the Bombay High Court has expressed its "anguish" at the delay in the payment of terminal benefits of government employees after their retirement. The observation was made while delivering the judgement on the petition filed by Dr Charles Pinto, retired Medical Officer of the Directorate of Health Services, who approached the court asking that his interest for the delayed payment on the amount received towards gratuity and GPF be paid to him. (H) RISE IN MALARIA: With a boom in construction activity, extensive use of pesticides in paddy fields to control the spread of worms and deltametrine for malaria prevention, the population of frogs has drastically decreased in marshy lands along the riverine shore of Tiswadi taluka. Frogs are insectivorous amphibians and play a vital role in maintaining the ecological balance of the lands. They survive on insects, mosquitoes that spread diseases like malaria, filarial and encephalitis.
