----------------------------------------------------------------------- Documented by Goa Desc Documentation Service & circulated by Goa Civic & Consumer Action Network (GOA CAN)<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Ph:2252660 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------- Major landslide at Socorro -------------------------------------- Three pedestrians had a miraculous escape when a major landslide occurred at Socorro Bobd (tunnel) at 7.30 am on Thursday, about 700 metres from the Panjim-Mapusa national highway.A major portion of the hill on both the sides has caved in resulting in debris, mud boulders blocking the entire road connecting the Porvorim Highway Tisko to Socorro church.
There is panic and fear in the entire village as more landslides may occur in the days to come. The PWD, other than putting a sign warning the residents not to use the road, has done nothing.
The villagers decried the inaction on the part of PWD and other government agencies for allowing the large-scale excavation at the foot of the hill sides resulting in the hill slope which was V shaped to now almost concave.
When this correspondent visited the site today evening landslides were already occurring and the whole area has become scary.The parish priest of Socorro church said that such landslides had been occurring right from the onset of this monsoon.
The civic and consumer forum has in the last six months brought this fact to the notice of the PWD, police and other government authorities, but no action has been taken so far.
Even when landslips began occurring with the onset of the monsoon this month, the PWD didn't depute any official to inspect the site.
The road was closed for vehicular traffic but pedestrians were using the road as it is the link road to two wards to the highway.The villagers have demanded that the chief minister inspect the area immediately and take remedial measures including temporary laying of strong nylon nets so as to prevent any mishaps. ------------------------------------- HERALD 27/6/03 page 1 -------------------------------------
