I appreciate all the comments on the Goenchem prize. As usual, I am especially
delighted that we have received skeptical comments, because after all it is precisely
that spirit that we want to reward. We are fully aware that this prize would draw
criticism and even the anger of honest and decent people. But we also know that we
would face stiff opposition from quacks, frauds, scam artistes, poseurs, etc. Despite
the latter concern, and the uneasy feeling about the fact that an "Auspicio" who posts
from a "Newways" address, is commenting on a prize that represents opposition to
auspiciousness and the new age nonsense, I would like to offer the following response
to the above comments.

First, I apologize to Auspicio Rodrigues if that is his real name and my uneasiness is
unwarranted. I am happy that our announcement caused him to contribute his inaugural
post on Goanet.

We, the members of the prize committee, are not exploiting anyone or anyone's
nostalgia. We are all volunteers with very little influence and modest resources. In
fact, we are trying to do something about folks who exploit the gullibility and
goodness of others. So you need not worry about any kind of exploitation from us.

We believe that the causes we espouse are genuine and extremely important. They may
also be egocentric objectives in the same sense as Auspicio's or Cipriano's comments
are egocentric. These Goanetters chose to invest their ego into voicing their own, not
so humble, opinion in this matter. I hope Auspicio knows that a lot of people in this
world share our interest in addressing the said causes. These causes are not uniquely
Goan causes. They are of great concern throughout the world. However, I am sure there
are many other genuine causes that need to be addressed. I hope Auspicio and others
would take the initiative in that regard.

This prize is not about what gets posted on Goanet. It is about what happens in Goa.
The announcement I posted on Goanet will appear in many Goan newspapers as press notes.

The use of these numbers and the simplistic name for this prize is meant to convey a
certain sense of irreverence towards the issues it addresses. In this sense it is
similar to the IgNobel prizes awarded at Harvard University in the U. S.

Cheers,

Santosh
