GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 03 July 2003 26,000 INDIANS LEAVE UAE: As many as 26,000 Indians were among 100,000 illegal immigrants who left United Arab Emirates under a six-month general amnesty that ended on 30 June, official sources said. The amnesty, originally meant for four months, was extended to six months to benefit maximum number of illegal expatriates wishing to leave the country without punishment. (PTI report in GT)
DRIVE AGAINST BELGAUM BEEF: The Department of Animal Husbandry will continue its ongoing drive of seizing unhealthy meat illegally transported in Goa from Belgaum. At least eight tones of meat which was confiscated by the department was destroyed in the incinerators at Goa Meat Complex, Usgao, in the past two days. The trouble over meat supply came to the fore after the department received several complaints that beef form cattle, which were not certified to be healthy, was being sold at nooks and corners in the State. (GT) BEEF RUNS OUT OF STOCK IN SALCETE: Beef ran out of stock in most of the cold storage units in Salcete as the Belgaum-based butchers and meat suppliers stopped transporting meat from July 2. Only a handful of cold storages in Margao had small quantities of beef for sale. However, a kg of beef was quoted at Rs.50 as against Rs.40. (H) A LITTLE BIT OF CASH: Twelve bag-liftings in the city over the last one month have plagued the Panjim town police no end. The favoured strategy adopted by the gang of baglifters is to use a little bit of cash to lure the attention of the unsuspecting victim.
