Dear Goenkars, Goa's coconut feni is going to have a "Geographically Indicative Patent" (just like France has for 'champagne') thanks to Dr. Vijay Mallya of the UB Group of companies. He is the promoter of Kingfisher ,'the king of Good times',beer which the Goans enjoy,he has a residence (he is mostly on the move, has his own jet),in Sinquerim and his kuldev is Mahalsa at Mardol-Ponda. You can call him a Goan, the same way the supercop Julio Ribeiro is a Goan.If his parents are not Goan, his great grand parents lived in Goa. Damn the Inquisition that made him temposarily 'non-goan','bhailo' or 'outsider'. Now he is an insider.Soon he will be the father of intwernational feni. Our feni. Dr.Gilbert Lawrence is correct about the 'pez' that we tend to become."What you eat,you become." is the new dictum. The Goa Tourism Dept. and 'amcho bhao Micky Pacheco' organized a 'Goan Food Festival' at Colva in May to serve (almost exclusively!).....tandoori chicken !!!!
We have a Goa University and very few qualified Goenkars to serve on its faculty. At the rate the girls out-number boys at SSC,HSSC and admissions to professional colleges in Goa, soon we will not have male doctors to treat their gender for hernia or hydrocele. When we have our pants down, may be we will have some shame and force our sons to study hard.We are used to an easy way of life . Complaining, may be.Nothing more than that. Earlier we had maths and biology teachers in our schools from elsewhere. We have mines with imported labour,we have constructions and industrial estates the same way. We wear 'foren' clothes and prefer scotch to feni.We are afterall Goenkars....totally confused about our identity !!! Time to wake up and smell the coffee... and drink it while it is still hot. That all our coffee comes from elsewhere does not matter. The world is a global village....we have always had a village mentality. However the topic he raises is an important one."Opportunity comes knocking but once" as the saying goes. And afterthose endless debates, all we have are a lot of broken shells whilesomebody else has made the omelet. > > > >Recently, there was a strong push from non-Goans for India's International Film festival to be located in Goa. The only voices on the film festival on theGoanet (the smart Goans both within and out of Goa) were against the project. Other countries spend millions of dollars trying to woo aninternational event like the summer or winter Olympics or Asian games. In Goa, we turn them away because we want to continue to have our pez.=:)) Goans in Goa have to decide. 'They cannot have their cake andeat it too'. Regards, Gilbert --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).
