----------------------------------------------------------------------- Documented by Goa Desc Documentation Service & circulated by Goa Civic & Consumer Action Network (GOA CAN)<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Ph:2252660 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------- Taken For A Ride --------------------------- A tunnel road connects the village of Socorro to the highway at Porvorim. The tunnel was cut, I am told, during the Portuguese rule to provide villagers with access to the cities of Mapusa or Panjim.
Since then, till of late, there has not been any complaint of any major land slide. The hill was later cut at the behest of a whimsical politician causing much hardship and suffering to daily commuters.
Members of the Socorro Civic and Consumer Forum got the work on the tunnel completed last April. But the use of the tunnel road was only short lived. With the incessant rain huge chunks of mud have fallen on the tunnel road, once again, inconveniencing commuters
We learn that road was widened solely for vested purposes. While the villagers have been taken for a ride, the real culprit sits cozy in his chair. Will anyone look into the grievances of the general public?
