I think that GL is totally missing the point here. Or is this a deliberate attempt to distort the issue, including (specifically) why and what I wrote in my earlier post.

Let me make it clear:

It appears that the above is another way of stereotyping Goans.

So, I ask whats wrong with Pez?

I did not write that PEZ is for the peasants only, (or for a certain section of the community.) You can review carefully what I actually said, I am sure intelligent minds can decipher what I EXPLICITLY stated in my earlier post.

'The word PEZ seems to emerge (or be misused) recently in posts to derive a derogatory meaning.

Pez is NORMALLY EATEN during the early hours of the day BY LOCAL GOANS (MAINLY by poor peasants).'

Now your whole argument seems to be slanted toward the class/caste and categorization of people, which was my main concern to begin with. And thats why I said: It is good for the soul that sometimes we stoop and drink at the fountain of humility.

I will keep this short, and answer your following questions:

In [EMAIL PROTECTED], >"Gilbert Lawrence" (GL)< writes:

[GL] Q1. If PEZ is all that great why 'the poor peasants' eat it and not the
badkars?

I thought we Goans were beyond the Badkar / Mundkar era? Am I missing the point here, or is GL away from Goa for too long a period?

[GL] Q2. If PEZ is so great why do only those who toil with sweat and
blood have it?

I will allow the benefit of the doubt that this question may emanate from scant knowledge of our Goan culture? I am sure there still are many Goan pez eaters in cyber-world (you will find some right here on this forum). We have already had some interesting comments from some GoaNetters. (See recent posts on GoaNet) :)

[GL] Q3. Do you have PEZ daily? If not, may I ask why not?

I was born with pez in my mouth, so you need not go into further probing, and I tell you what -- this year I will celebrate Goa Day by drinking Pez, instead of say Beer or Vodka Hows that, for celebrating Goan culture? It works just fine for me. :)

[GL] Q4. We all 'upper class Goans' want PEZ around - but for somebody else.

Who are the Upper Class Goans? -- I certainly do NOT subscribe to this category of UPPER CLASS. :(

[GL] Q5. This is not an academic and cerebral dialogue and I do not plan to continue with it.

Good for you, I did not start this debate, by stereotyping Goans --pez.

Though I wanted to make the above points. GL

Thank you, and so did I. Again, thanks for being so kind to us pez eaters. We appreciate it.

Cheers!

Joe Vaz

PS: Fred N is right in saying: So we keep excluding people. On various grounds. On the basis of the languages they speak or don't. On the place of their birth. On ethnicity. On class or education. On region and religion.

So who's left? Just a small clique of "Goans", conveniently-defined so as to allow us come across as big frogs in a small pond? I think this approach is shallow and unfit to take the bulk of Goans or Goa ahead into the 21st century. FN

Indeed, we come across as big frogs in a small pond. We must learn to adapt, harmonize, respect each other and maintain cohesion within our communities, while acting as building blocks for our present and future generations. ~Joe Vaz
