The accident claimed the lives of Mohan Bhaskar Talker, his wife Bhagirathi, son Bhasker from Pernem, and a close relative, Sumitra Arun Talker. (GT)
5-YEAR-OLD CRUSHED: Five-year-old Heena Shaikh, a kinder-garten student of St Anne's in Margao, became the latest victim of rash and negligent driving yesterday. After getting down from the school bus, she was knocked down by the bus as it moved forward. (GT) TINY TOT LOCKED UP IN CLASSROOM: It was a nightmare for a tiny tot after he was locked inside a government primary school at Dona Paula on Monday. The boy belonging to a family working on a construction site nearby, remained trapped in the classroom from 5 pm to 9 pm. It was not immediately known as to how he remained inside the classroom when the school was closed for the day. (H) IMA OPPOSES PRIVATE PRACTICE: The Goa chapter of the Indian Medical Association opposed any move to permit private practice by government doctors. A delegation of the IMA told the Chief Minister and Health Minister that they vehemently oppose any move to allow doctors from government run hospitals, particularly the Goa Medical College, to undertake private practice in any form. (NT) YOUTH DROWNS IN QUARRY: A 20-year-old youth from Dadachiwadi-Palyem drowned in a water-filled quarry on Sunday evening. Ragoba Narayan Kandolkar had gone along with his friends for a bath in the quarry. (H) CABINET NOD FOR EDUCATION CORPN: The Goa Cabinet yesterday approved an ordinance to set up the Goa Education Development Corporation, an effort which Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar claimed is aimed at achieving better quality delivery systems in the educational field. (H) MORTGAGE OF AGRICULTURAL LAND: The government has approved a legislation facilitating mortgage of agricultural property for development purpose. The cabinet, which met on July 14, approved the legislation in a bid to help those who wish to mortgage their agricultural properties in nationalized or co-operative banks. (GT) MODEL OF EFFICIENCY: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar claimed that his government in Goa was a model of efficiency and it had shown during its tenure how the affairs of the State could be managed to deliver the goods to the people. He was speaking at a BJP workers' meet held at Mandrem recently. (GT) POWER TRADING POLICY: The Goa Cabinet yesterday took a decision to set up a committee of experts to formulate and implement a holistic power trading policy for the State. (H) STABBED IN AMBAULIM: A man (Conceicao Fernandes) was seriously injured after he was allegedly stabbed by Baptist Fernandes at Copelabhatt-Ambaulim on Monday evening. (H) TREE FALLS ON HOUSE: Strong cyclonic winds, accompanied by rains, uprooted a huge mango tree which fell on a house at Hindwada, Narvem in Bicholim, damaging property worth Rs.50,000. (GT) LANDSLIDE IN SADA: Boulders came tumbling down at Bharatline near Sada in the port town Vasco on Monday morning and the walls of a house developed cracks and damaged the toilet, prompting Mormugao Port officials to shift one family to its port quarters. (H) SECOND PHASE OF PANJIM MARKET: The work on the second phase of the new market for Panjim is expected to commence from today (July 15) as shopkeepers were handed over keys for shifting to the newly constructed first phase of the market. (GT) MADKAIKAR, SUDIN TO ABSTAIN: Transport Minister Pandurang Madkaikar and PWD Minister Ramkrishna Dhavlikar are unlikely to attend the central committee meeting of the MGP on Thursday for different reasons. When the panchayat acquired around 15,725 square meters of land for the grounds in the 80's, the body was required to pay only around Rs.7 lakh to the landowners as compensation. The latest position, however, shows that the compensation amount together with the interest has shot up to a whooping around Rs.17 lakh thanks to the indifference and casual attitude of successive village heads. Hailing from Kumbharjua village, Dhume started his career in the revenue department under the Portuguese government. After retirement, he conducted research on major Hindu temples of Goa and wrote over 30 books on history of most of these temples.
