Another Option There is a viable option for the disputed site in Ayodhya: Instead of erecting a structure that separates one religion from another, why don't we try to build something that underscores what we all share? In short, an architecture that unites us? The temple, mosque, church and gurdwara may appear different from one another in form, but at the level of architectonic symbolism, one is astounded by how much they have in common. Thus, the axis mundi (the column of the universe connecting earth and sky), so fundamental to the Buddhist stupa at Sanchi, is also the generating concept of the Pantheon in Rome. Again, the centrality of the water fountain at the core of the Char Bagh (symbolising the source of life) resonates profoundly with its counterpart in the vastu-purush-mandala where the centre is conceived as bindu (the source of energy). A memorial edifice on the Ayodhya site that seeks to express (indeed, emphasise) our commonalities would help heal the tragic events of the last few years. It would also be the first crucial step towards giving back to our country the peace and unity it so desperately seeks.
