Ervell Menezes, whose film-reviews appear in the local press has said that organising expensive international film festivals in Goa is premature, partly as Goa has no serious film culture in the first place. I agree.
We must get down to forming a good film society in Goa. The Bangalore Film Society and Chennai Film Society are around for guidance and the National Film Archive of India, Pune has a huge archive of films from all over the world. We could get together and have a place in Panjim so that members can congregate every weekend to watch 16/35 mm films, shorts, documentaries, etc. We could invite reputed experts to hold workshops, conduct short film appreciation courses and hopefully conduct small festivals eventually. With digital cams and non-linear editing technology abounding now, we could support each other in creating our own short films and grow from there. Does anyone on the Goanet list have any past experience in being a part of a film society ? I know there have been short-lived societies in Margao and Panaji in the past. The argument I get when I talk to people these days is that times have changed and one can watch whatever he wants at home. Not really.Where can I get a print/tape of Satyajit Ray's or Akiro Kurosawa's or Luis Brunel's films ? I'm sure some buffs in Goa would be interested in going forward.IFIs aside, we are losing out by not experiencing the master film-makers. If anyone is game, do get in touch. ----Jose Lourenco __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! Search - Faster. Easier.
