----------------------------------------------------------------------- Documented by Goa Desc Documentation Service & circulated by Goa Civic & Consumer Action Network (GOA CAN)<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Ph:2252660 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------- Nine ways suggested for protecting Advoi nullah --------------------------------------------------------------- The Executive Engineer of the Water Resources Department has made nine recommendations in the matter of the dumping of mining rejects by mining companies in the catchment area of the Advoi nullah, including that the companies stop dumping mining rejects on these sites and that de-siltation be done every year before the onset of the monsoon.
These recommendations came in the wake of a petition filed by Laxman Sawaikar and others in the Panjim Bench of the Bombay High Court challenging the dumping of rejects by mining companies in the nullah.
The other recommendations made were that the mining companies should not dump mining rejects on the existing dumps, which should be protected by the construction of a laterite wall around them.
Regarding protective measures, it was suggested that to arrest the silt from going into the nullah extensive plantation should be taken up. Pitching of dumps was also to be done with laterite boulders, was another recommendation.
The executive engineer has also recommended that de-siltation be done every year before the onset of the monsoon, and that regular maintenance of the nullah be done to avoid blocking and accumulation of silt as well as over flowing during the monsoon.
The silt accumulated in the silting tank constructed by the mining companies should be cleared every year, and mining companies should follow instructions given time to time by the Canal officer, the Department of Mines, Office of the Director General of Mines Safety and Indian Bureau of Mines and implement the same.
It has also been recommended that the mining companies submit a report of the work executed by them to the government authorities and receive suggestions from them. On receipt of these suggestions, they should be implemented within a prescribed time period.
The matter has been adjourned till July 22 giving time to the mining companies to file their reply. --------------------------------- HERALD 16/7/03 page 5 --------------------------------
