I have read about the ''Goenchem'' prize and think it is a commendable idea. As a resident Goan who speaks colloquial Konkani, ''Goemchem'' prize sounded a bit amiss to me. Should it not be Goemcho prize? In colloquial Konkani here in Goa we refer to Goenchem Cheddum, Goemchem Dodol or say Goemchem Ur'rak. When using the word ''prize'' or even its Konkani equivalent, Inam, we would say for example, ''Taka poilo prize meulo,'' or ''taka poilo inam meulo.'' (He got the first prize). We do not say taka ''poilem'' prize meulem. In colloquial Konkani, the gender of ''prize'' seems to be masculine. So Goem-CHO prize (not Goem-CHEM prize), I think, would be more appropriate. I admit I am no Konkani pundit. Could someone please throw some more light on this?
