The analogies presented by the student do not make any sense at all. Absence of heat or light can be detected and measured extremely precisely. The professor could have demonstrated how to do that. And then asked the student how he can detect and measure the absence of God. The statement that "Evil is simply the state where God is not present, like cold without heat or darkness without light" is simply wrong. It is wrong both logically and factually.
