----------------------------------------------------------------------- Documented by Goa Desc Documentation Service & circulated by Goa Civic & Consumer Action Network (GOA CAN)<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Ph:2252660 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------- Mumbai cable rates will be applicable in State: HC ------------------------------------------------------------------ The Panjim Bench of the Bombay High Court has directed that all the orders passed by the High Court at Mumbai with regards to the hike in cable television charges and related matters would be applicable to the State of Goa.
The Cable TV Users Association of Goa (CTUAG) had approached the court seeking directions against the cable operators that they withdraw the proposed hikes in the prevailing rates. In addition, the petitioner had also stipulated that the cable operators be restrained from disconnecting their connections in case of non-payment of hiked fees.
The court observed that considering the nature of the grievance, certain directions were given earlier to the effect that the cable operators were not to make any further increase in the rates as charged until further direction.
The cable operators had now approached the court alleging that the petitioner � CTUAG represented by Juino D�souza � had issued a press note which distorted the order of the court. On the directions of the court, the petitioner filed an affidavit and has enclosed a copy of the press note issued by him.
From the press note, the division bench held that it was clear that the petitioner had approached the court only to seek publicity and that the press note distorted the order of the court, and imposed a fine of Rs 5000 on the petitioner.
As a related matter is pending before the High Court at Bombay, the Panjim Bench directed that whatever further orders are passed there, would be applicable to cable operators in the state of Goa. ----------------------------------- HERALD 6/8/03 page 7 -----------------------------------
