GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 12 Aug 2003 NO BAN ON SOFT DRINKS SANS TESTS: "All soft drinks are bad for health and do not form a part of good and healthy living," opined Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar yesterday. However, he clarified that the government would consider effecting a ban on sale of softdrinks in the State provided the result of tests from samples of various aerated drinks collected by the Good and Drugs Administration prove to be harmful for human consumption. He also stated that government could stop the sale of such products in canteens/departments run by the State. (GT)
HIGH TECH LABS FOR FDA: The Food and Drugs Administration will get modern laboratories with high-tech equipment thanks to a Rs.452.36 lakh aid package from the World Bank. CM Parrikar said the funds will also be used for provision of equipment, furniture, materials, supplies, staff, training of existing personnel to update their skill. (GT) CHEERFUL START TO FISHING SEASON: The new fishing season began on a promising note on Monday as the mechanised fishing vessels netted tones of the prized solar shrimp off the Goan coastal waters. The total catch of solar unloaded at the Cutbona fishing jetty itself till the evening was put at over 100 tonnes, valued at over Rs.60 lakh, while several more tones were netted off the Velsao-Cansaulim belt and Vasco. Boat owners, however, pointed out that Day One would have been still better had there been a heavy downpour, but sounded optimistic over the large presence of the shrimp in the waters. (H) BENDURLEM VILLAGERS GO BERSERK: Mounting opposition against the proposed garbage treatment plant at Bendurlem in Balli panchayat of South Goa, the residents yesterday snatched away files and blocked the vehicles of the State government officials during the inspection. (NT) DR CARMO AZAVEDO'S DEMISE: Veteran journalist, well-known writer and freedom fighter Dr Carmo Azavedo breathed his last at Pilerne on August 10. He was 91, and leaves behind a daughter. The funeral services will be held at St Inez Church on August 14 at 4.30 pm. He was a medical practitioner and practiced in several parts of the country. Dr Azavedo was a great scholar and presented papers in India as well as abroad on different topics. Until about three years ago, he contributed articles regularly to number of Goan publications, particularly, Goa Today. (GoaNOW) RETIREMENT AGE FOR TEACHERS: The Panaji bench of the Bombay High Court has upheld the validity of the Goa School Education (Amendment) Act, 2002, which fixes the retirement of school teachers at the age of 58. (NT) COMPUTERS FOR COLLEGE TOPPERS: The Cyberage Student Scheme will be extended to 25 meritorious students in first year of College, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said yesterday. Under the scheme, 25 toppers in every stream of every college will receive computers at a subsidised rate. The first lot of computers will be distributed beginning from 1 October. (H) BAN ON COW SLAUGHTER: After much dithering, the Union government yesterday decided to ban cow slaughter, bringing the issue under the concurrent list which has the Centre's jurisdiction. "There will be a total ban on export of cow meat", Parliamentary affairs Minister and cabinet spokesperson Sushma Swaraj said after the cabinet meeting. The date marks the inclusion of Konkani in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution by both houses of Parliament in 1992. Writing in the official website of World Goa Day, Mr Rene Barreto, convenor of the event, says, "On Goa Day this year, thousands of Goans will once again remind themselves of the need to work to preserve out culture, music, history, language, cuisine, and art for our children, the non-Goan community, and for posterity."
