GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 18 Aug 2003 PERFORMANCE-WISE GRANTS TO COLLEGES: Seriously concerned with the increasing percentage of unemployed diploma and degree holder engineers in the State, Goa government is contemplating linking of grants to colleges with their performance and job placement capacity. A recent study conducted by the Department of Technical Education indicates that about 50 per cent of technically qualified diploma holders passing out from various polytechnic colleges, ITIs and engineering institutions in the State get employed. (GT) PARRIKAR PROMISES TO BEAUTIFY MAPUSA: CM Parrikar promised to take up development projects in Mapusa and made a specific reference to the acute problem of congestion facing the city. Speaking at the BJP workers' convention in Mapusa, Parrikar stated that the Panjim model will be followed to beautify the city of Mapusa, work for which will begin as soon as the monsoon season end. (H) 150 SCHEMES LAUNCHED: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said his government had planned 197 schemes for the all round development of Goa. Out of which 150 schemes have already been launched and the people were deriving benefits of these schemes. Forty such schemes will be launched in the near future, Parrikar added, while addressing the party workers from the Mapusa assembly constituency on August 17. (GT) AILING SANGUEM BRIDGE: The main bridge at Sanguem has been hit by an onslaught of pressure from every side. Movement of heavy vehicles has weakened the bridge from the top, while the roots of trees have entered into the spans, widening the cracks on the sides of the bridge, which is on the verge of collapse. (GT) E-LITERATE WITHIN THREE YEARS: Fifty per cent of the Goan population will be e-literate within the next three years due to the Cyberage computer scheme and due to the government's concerted efforts towards e-governance, the Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar said in Mapusa on August 17. He said that Rs.30 crore has been earmarked for the Cyberage scheme for this year and a total of around 15,000 students are expected to benefit from the same. (NT) HUNDREDS TURN UP FOR "BONDERAM": A large Sunday crowd turned up at Malar on August 17 to witness the age-old "Bonderam" organised by Sao Mathias Sports Club. In all, nine groups of dancers from the village participated in the festivities, which, however, was not a competition. The flag parade, which comprised 12 flags including the national flag of the Republic of Portugal, the Indian national tricolour and of Herald, wended its way through the main thoroughfares of the village before culminating at the venue of the celebrations. (H) WATER SHORTAGE IN PANAJI: Residents of nearly 35 houses on the hillock behind the Tourist Hostel in Panaji face water problem even during the monsoon season. According to Convenor of Panjim City Public Forum, Vincent de Souza, he along with the residents, who face severe water pressure problem, visited the office of the PWD assistant engineers on 17 July and narrated their woes. (GT) JAUNDICE CASES ON THE RISE: The health authorities have attributed the rise in the number of jaundice cases in Panaji city and surrounding areas to the contamination of water and mushrooming of roadside joints. Sources in the GMC said that patients suffering from Hepatitis had increased during the last 15 days and the doctors are trying to trace the reasons for the same. Most cases proved to be that of Hepatitis E. (H) A DROUGHT-FREE FUTURE: Memories of the last summer are quite terrifying. Hopefully, the water situation should change for the better at least in four talukas where conventional and scientific watershed programme is being implemented. WORLD GOA DAY AT QATAR: The Goan Overseas Association, Qatar, will organise the "World Goa Day" on August 20, in solidarity with Goans and various organisations all over the world celebrating the 4th World Goa Day. The day marks the 12th anniversary of Konkani being included in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, in 1992. Goans in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Portugal, Spain, Kenya, Tanzania, Africa and some countries in the Middle East will celebrate the Goa Day. Fr Balthassar Joaquim Vicente Pereira (94) of the Allahabad Diocese passed away after brief illness in Simla on August 9, 2003. Fr Balthassar J Pereira lived a solitary life at the foothills of Himalayas in Theog and was closely associated with the Vatican in Rome. He was born on May 20, 1909, in Santana village of Ilhas-Goa.
