Even though the focus of attention is on the restaurants in central Panjim, a visit to the canteens of Goa Medical College at Bambolim revealed that they too are apparently run in unhygienic conditions.
Here is a first hand account of the canteen located on the extreme left of VIP block. It is patronised by the relations of patients and doctors as well. The floor of the canteen is so filthy that it is impossible to discover when it was mopped last. It seems it is permanent playground of flies. Also the floor of the kitchen has "garnishing" of cigarettes butts and the pieces of paper.
Two buckets, half filled with water are placed in a room, which is in the middle of inside the canteen. One bucket contains soap water and other plain water. A waiter just dips a steel glass in the water and then fill it with water from the adjacent barrel. Water in the two buckets was so much muddy. Yet same water continued to be used.
Water from the big barrel placed next to these buckets is served to the customers. It was shocking that drinking water was left uncovered. The lid of the barrel was missing.
The only sink in the corner of the room was leaking and was tied with cloth to stop the leaking. A water pipe supplying water to the canteen was seen to be leaking at three spots. To stop leakage, it was tied with cloth but water was still leaking.
Most of the food stuff, batatwadas, bhajias, samosas and bread were left uncovered. And the so-called cooks with greasy faces do not seem to know ABC of healthy living.
On the other hand the canteen manager or the person who sits on the counter, thinks his only duty is to collect money and occasionally shout at waiters.
The store rooms of this as well as of the other canteen near the OPD Registration counter are no better. Apparently, these rooms are also used for sleeping by the waiters and others employees. People continue to savour food that is cooked and served in unhealthy environment.
Mostly the relations of patients and GMC staff, including the doctors patronise these canteens. Some patients too buy food from these canteens.
It is not surprising if people get infected in the GMC campus itself. Reportedly, one Mr Alfred D'Souza, who often eats at GMC canteen was today tested positive for Hepatitis and malaria. Mr D'Souza who work for PWD, Bambolim unit, often frequented GMC canteen to eat his meals. He thinks he has possibly picked the virus at GMC canteen. --------------------------------- HERALD 22/8/03 page 1 ---------------------------------
