Mangloreans Catholics are Goans? Wilson writes: I just like to budge in here as I always wondered, are Manglorians really Goans. Heard different stories of there being a huge fire in Goa so some families took off to Mangalore and settled there etc.etc. Now my question is, wherever Goans go they will always make sure they will call themselves say Pakistani Goans, Bombay Goans, Kuwait Goans etc. did anyone hear Mangloreans saying that? It does not really matter at times but I hate to see them fluctuating between Goans and Mangloreans whenever they choose to. Be proud of what you are and stay put.
Gilbert responds: I do not know where Wilson lives. Unless he lives in Goa (native), he also has a dual heritage - genetically and / or socially. All Diaspora Goans (by definition) have dual /multiple cultural heritages and they are /or should be proud of all of them if they are enlightened. Because off these combined heritages these Goans have / are given an opportunity to a broader perspective in life. This is not to say that native Goans cannot get a broader perspective to life by making the effort. Neither does it mean than all Diaspora Goans have a broad perspective. So "fluctuating Goans" are indeed making the "best of life" and should be complimented. This IMHO, is as long as in the process of fluctuation they do not deny or are not ignorant of their cultural roots. And this could happen even to the native. The GSB who left Goa 500-1000 years ago do not call themselves Goans. They are from Bangalore, Maharastra etc. But they speak Konkani and return to worship at their Gotra temple in Goa. ########################################################################## # Send submissions for Goanet to [EMAIL PROTECTED] # # PLEASE remember to stay on-topic (related to Goa), and avoid top-posts # # More details on Goanet at http://joingoanet.shorturl.com/ # # Please keep your discussion/tone polite, to reflect respect to others # ##########################################################################
