Dear Goanetters,

Some time there was a posting on goanet enquiring whether there any wester
classical music recitals in Goa. I had posted about the Maestro Antonio
Figueiredo centenary music programme on 20 August. Less than a month later,
we have been treated to a wonderful 'Western Music Recital' by young Goans
[most of them in their teens] who are 'advanced students' at the school of
Western Music at the Kala Academy. The programme was co-organized by KA and
Fundacao Oriente. Pratapsingh Rane,ex-CM and current Chairman of KA was the
Chief Guest.

Sanya Myla Cotta, the daughter of Schubert Cotta[from Cotta Mansion,Agacaim]
and Maxie Pereira[daughter of ex-MLA Teotonio Pereira of Paulo buses fame]
played the violin like a virtuoso. Mozart's 'Concerto No.5 in A Major' and
Bruch's 'Concerto in G Minor' is what this young lass treated us to.Joanne
Marie D'Mello, daughter of E.D'Mello [of MPT] and Jeanne Mendonca[from
Saligao who teaches in SFX school,Siolim] rendered an 'outstanding and
mature mezzo soprano'that she was billed to do.The vocal rendition of
Schubert's 'Serenade' and Greig's 'The Swan' were indeed a pleasure to hear.
Their parents are my contemporaries, acquiantances and friends. Naturally, I
am proud to be in the audience ,listen to them perform and encourage them to
reach for the sky! If this is what they have achieve by the seventeenth year
of their life, even the sky may not be the limit.

Another seventeen year old, Ingrid Anne Nazereth, the daughter of Brenda
[whose sister,Yvonne, is a familiar face in their native Aldona] and Philip
Nazereth[a well-known piano tuner] excelled on the piano,in which she has
the eighth grade from Trinity College,London. She played 32 variations in C
Minor composed by Beethovan from memory. No mean feat !

Rui Manuel Lobo is neither a teenager nor a girl.He is an engineer who has
come back to the spanish guitar after 20 years gap. He learnt the vilin
under the famous Maestro Figueiredo and learnt classical guitar playing
under Derrick D'Souza in Mumbai[then Bombay].He is now learning under
Schubert Cotta[Sanya's father],who has returned to Goa after many years in
Hamburg.

It was a fantastic show and a beautiful prelude to Clube Nacional's annual
"Harvest Dance" that interestingly coincided with the Onam festival of the
Malayalees and the festa de novidades in Goa. Not yet harvest time in
Goa,actually. There was a lot of Konkani song and dance at the harvest dance
presented by Francisco Martins or Funkito ,as he is affectionately known.
