GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 19 Sep 2003 TO CURB VERNA ACCIDENTS: A high level meeting consisting of local MLA, Director General of Police, South Goa Collector, RTO director, Superintendent of police (traffic) was again convened at the Verna police station yesterday to discuss the way and means to reduce motor vehicle accidents on the Verna by-pass. (During the last one year and nine months, as many as 14 people have lost their lives in road accidents on the by-pass at Verna.) Ironically, director of IRTE Jaspal Singh though invited for the meeting, was made to sit outside the chamber where the meeting was convened. Local MLA Alex Sequeira blamed the government for not initiating immediate steps to streamline the vehicular movement. (GT)
CITY WATER TESTS POSITIVE FOR HEPATITIS A & E: In an alarming revelation, the water samples from the contaminated section of the pipeline in Panjim have tested positive for Hepatitis A and E. This was disclosed by sources in the PWD, who wished to remain anonymous. (H) GOA CONTRIBUTED RS.300 CR TO NATIONAL EXCHEQUER: Goa has contributed about Rs.300 crore to the national exchequer with 1.8 lakh of the 13.5 lakh population filing their returns on income, stated the Vice President of Income Tax Employees' Federation, Mr Lawrence Braganza. He further said that it is about 13.5 per cent compliance which must be the highest in the country. Mr Braganza was speaking at the 4th biennial circle delegates conference of the Income Tax Employees' Federation, Karnataka and Goa circle, in Panaji on September 18. (NT) DEATH AFTER FALL: One Pedro Rodrigues from Shelli, Loliem, died on the spot after he fell off from a tree. Pedro had climbed the tree to cut some branches. He lost his balance and came crashing down. (GT) NEPALI DROWNS OFF UTORDA: Playing a ball game on a beach can sometimes prove costly. This turned out true for a 26-year-old Nepali, Suresh, who got drowned in the waters off Utorda beach while trying to retrieve a ball on September 16. (H) RUSSIAN RESCUED: Chirkov Marta, a 27-year-old Russian national from Moscow, was rescued by lifeguards at Vagator beach on Thursday morning. Chirkov ventured into the sea at about 11.15 am and found himself pulled by strong current and began shouting for help. (H) MOTORCYCLIST DIES: Leo Braganza, a 37-year-old man from Santa Cruz, died after his motor-cycle ran into a traffic island at the Goa University premises on Wednesday night while he was traveling from Dona Paula to Santa Cruz. (H) 'KETAMINE' HAUL: A whopping 17.5 litres of 'ketamine' (valued at several crore of rupees in the European market) were seized in a raid conducted by an anti-smuggling unit of Customs in Panjim on Wednesday. The Customs officials nabbed a Spaniard, Martinez Liano, who was in the process of dispatching the consignment, disguised in rose-water bottles to his native country, Spain. Incidentally, a 23-year-old Spaniard, believed to be his wife, was found dead, and ketamine overdose is suspected to be the cause. Her body is currently in the Goa Medical College morgue. (H) REGISTRATION OF CHILDREN'S HOMES. In the light of the recent notification of the Goa Children's Act, the State government is enforcing provisions that call for registration of children's homes. All houses that are already in existence must register themselves with the department before 10 October this year. Sources said that the provisions were created in light of the infamous Freddy Peats case where inmates of Peats' shelter were abused by paedophiles. (GT) KTC AUTHORITIES APOLOGISE TO SANJAY SCHOOL STUDENTS: It was a fight for right by the deaf and dumb students of the Sanjay School, Porvorim, and they succeeded in it. Seven students of the Sanjay school, who were proceeding towards Mapusa, were denied free travel by one of the KTC bus conductors, in spite of the fact that they were in possession of the social welfare cards. The KTC MD, Mr Arun Dessai, after receiving the information rushed to the school and tendered apology to the children. (NT) VENDORS GHERAO MARGAO COUNCIL CHAIRPERSON: Aggrieved over the failure of the Margao Municipal authorities to take action against those operating illegally, on Wednesday, 300 vegetable vendors from the Gandhi Market took a morcha and gheraoed chairperson Kamilini Painginkar, who was caught unaware. The agitators were led by Rajendra Azgaonkar, brother of panchayat minister Manohar Azgaonkar. (GT) COLVA SARPANCH OUSTED: The sarpanch of Colva, Annie Mascarenhas, finally bowed out of office after she was ousted in a no-confidence motion on Thursday. The no-trust motion brought against her was carried by 8-1 votes, signaling the end of Annie's 18-month tenure as sarpanch. (H) APPLICATION FOR TEMPORARY SHACKS: With the new tourist season just under a fortnight away, the tourism department has called for applications from residents of Goa to set up temporary shacks on the beaches along the Goan coast, from October 2003, to June 15,2004. The Tourism department will permit 2 shacks at Keri, 7 at Arambol, 6 at Ozran, 3 In Mandrem, 5 in Anjuna, 5 in Morjim, 5 in Vagator, 10 at Nerul, two in Siridao and 2 in Vainguinim, all attracting a fee of Rs.50,000. The shacks in Candolim and Calangute will attract a fee of Rs.60,000. (NT) NO SHACKS AT PALOLEM BEACH! Goa's famed Palolem beach may soon be out of the beach shack map of Goa during the tourism season. The council noted that shacks restrict access to tourists and picnickers besides blocking space and obstructing access to schools and family picnics. The council also felt that the shacks spoil the nature and beauty of the beach. However, to meet the needs of the tourists and make provision for accommodation, the council has agreed to allot licences to seasonal huts from September 30 to June 15. (H) SHORTAGE OF DOCTORS AT ID HOSPITAL: The Staff at Infections Diseases Hospital at Ponda is overburdened as it faces an acute shortage of doctors. Situated at Tisk-Ponda, the 72-bed hospital has 30 maternity reserved beds. (GT) HONORARIUM FOR CO-OPTED ZILLA PARISHAD MEMBERS: The sarpanchas from 11 talukas who were co-opted on the Zilla Panchayats will shortly be granted a status on par with ZP members and also be paid a honorarium of Rs.5,000 monthly. In all, 22 sarpanchas from 11 talukas in the State have been co-opted in ZPs. (GT) INDIAN ECONOMY TO GROW: The International Monetary Fund yesterday said that the Indian economy is expected to grow at 5.6 per cent in 2003 and 5.9 per cent in 2004 and singled out the country for maintaining a high per capita growth rate. (UNI report in NT) INDIA'S OIL IMPORTS: Despite war clouds looming large over the region in 2002, India imported over 50 per cent of its crude oil requirement from Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait and Iran during the last financial year. The total imports from the West Asian region were higher than last year at 55.04 million tonne against 53.429 million tonne in 2001-02, with Saudi Arabia continuing to be the largest seller of crude. (UNI report in NT) AUSTRALIAN CARGO PLANE FORCE-LANDS: An Australian cargo carrier which was flying from Muscat to Colombo, made an emergency landing at Dabolim airport following a technical snag yesterday (September 18) evening. The aircraft, which is owned by Heavy Lift Cargo Airlines, Sydney, had six persons on board including the captain and was loaded with spare parts.
