The Election Commission has set a target to cover 85 per cent of the
electorate for the photo identity cards. But some villagers in Salvador do Mundo
were in a shock when their ID cards were issued at the village panchayat
after a photo session on August 23.
The ID cards were issued with names spelt incorrectly. For instance: Ayres is entered as Avarit, Florie as Fiory, Anthony as Antoni, Joaquim as Jacquim. The list is endless.
One wonders how the such mistakes can be made. When asked to make
the required corrections, the identity card issuing staff expressed helplessness.
The ID cards are issued, they said, as per the names entered in the electoral list.
I presume the identity card becomes a valuable document which the holder
can utilise for a number of purposes. It seems that to effect the required correction,
the card holder must approach the mamlatdar's office.
Why should the card holder have to waste his/her time for no fault of his/hers?
Precaution ought to have been taken at the time of enumeration.
