GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 27 Sep 2003 CCP TIGHTLIPPED ON WATER REPORTS: Though the outbreak of viral hepatitis has largely died down, there still appears to be a question mark over the quality of water, in some cases, sourced and supplied by eateries and restaurants. While testing of water sources used by 400 eateries by a private agency engaged by the Corporation of the City of Panaji is in progress, the findings of a few samples has revealed various levels of contamination in some cases. However, the details of the finds are not yet known as CCP authorities are tightlipped about the problems, hinting that it may trigger alarm among the people. (GT)
ASSEMBLY SESSION LIKELY TO BE STORMY: The ensuing session of the Goa legislative assembly from 29 September, though a short, four-day affair, is likely to be an eventful one in the wake of the outbreak of viral hepatitis and the dust kicked up over the EDC white paper. (GT) 'IMPROVE COMMUNITY POLICING': The XXVIII symposium of the heads of 40 police training institutions across the country began deliberations on the challenges before the police force, and ways and means to improve policing in India. Several presentations were made on the second day yesterday at the Goa International Centre, Dona Paula. The Governor of Goa, Mr Kidar Nath Sahani, while inaugurating the meeting yesterday, urged the police officials to improve community policing system in the country, and take the locals into confidence to seek information on matters pertaining to crime. (NT) TWO POWER STAFFERS ELECTROCUTED: Mystery shrouds Thursday's incident at Fatrade-Varca wherein two NMR workers employed with the Electricity department sustained serious injuries after being electrocuted while working on a dead electric line. (H) KONKANI HAS A RICH LEGACY: Konkani Sangeet and Natak Akademi will be launched today at the Kala Akademi, Panjim, at the hands of the Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, with the motto to preserve and promote the cultural legacy of Konkani. Konkani has a rich legacy of music and drama but the youth of today is influenced by other factors which take him away from his roots. This has resulted in the utter neglect of his own culture. In a missing complaint to the police, Laxmi Bhagwat stated that Chandrakant had gone to work at Candolim on 22 September at 7 am. (H) NIGERIAN HELD IN DRUG CASE: The Mumbai police, yesterday, arrested a Nigerian national, Victor, from a rented house in Merces in connection with a NDPS case registered against him at the VP Police Station, Mumbai. (NT) ONE HELD FOR ABDUCTING WOMAN: One Caetano Cardozo of Ambaulim-Quepem has been arrested by the Cuncolim police for allegedly abducting a 61-year-old woman and also for cheating. (H) ONE MISSING: One Mr Domnic Coutinho from Umta Vaddo, Calangute, is reported missing from Baga from Friday morning. According to a complaint lodged by his daughter, 55-year old Coutinho left the house for a walk towards Baga in the morning and never returned. (H) UNNATURAL DEATH: One Simamsaab Shilsaab (50) of Zuari Nagar was found dead by hanging in his house yesterday. (H) DESHPRABHU HITS OUT AT PARULEKAR: The Congress Legislative Party spokesman and MLA Jitendra Deshprabhu yesterday alleged that the Economic Development Corporation was forced to sanction Rs.1.5 crore to a new company floated by former Minister Suresh Parulekar, by flouting all norms. The two other sister concerns owned by Parulekar were granted one-time settlement (OTS) and four others are likely to be granted OTS scheme, he charged. (GT) WORLD TOURISM DAY: The State Tourism Department has arranged a host of activities to mark the observance of World Tourism Day, in the state today. The Tourism department has arranged a 'beach cleaning drive' on all the beaches along the state's coast, and those connected with the tourism industry along with school children will participate in the drive. (NT) MOOD OF TOURISM INDUSTRY UPBEAT: The mood in the tourism industry appears upbeat going by the hotel bookings received so far, the forthcoming tourist season is looking good. "Hotel bookings, compared to the last few years, are excellent", according to the president of Travel and Tourism Association of Goa, Charles Bonifacio. Compared to 379 charters last season, this time we are expecting 600," claims Director of Tourism, N Suryanarayana. He is expecting the foreign tourist arrivals to go up from one lakh plus to around 1.5 lakh this season. Though the Goa government has shared 75 per cent of the costs involved in the making of the serial, the producers have appealed to the public, to come forward and help make the serial a success. (GT) FILM APPRECIATION COURSE: In view of the International Film Festival of India in Goa and in order to develop film culture in the State, the Goa College of Architecture, Altinho, has introduced a film appreciation course as part of its syllabus. (NT) NO INDIAN FILM AT OSCARS: The year 2003 may be a good year for the Hindi film industry at the box office with hits like "Bhoot", "Chalte Chalte" and "Koi.Mil Gaya". Unfortunately, not so at the 76th annual Academy Awards. No Indian film will be nominated for Oscars in foreign languages category. CRACKDOWN ON HAWKERS: Police cracked down on hawkers and confiscated good displayed on the roads and footpaths in the municipal market under Goa Tourist and Trade Act. Amidst complaints that hawkers from other places outside Goa were blocking the roads and footpaths, the police initiated action against them. (GT) TO FACE MILK SHORTFALL: The National Dairy Development Board has estimated that Goa will require a supply of four lakh litres of milk daily by 2013, and hence face a shortage of two lakh litres per day. It has stated that Goa will have to gear up to make up for the shortfall in the next decade. Goa produces about 1.35 lakh litres of milk daily, though the demand is close to 2.5 lakh litres.
