------------------------------------------------------------- Dentists to install needle destroyers in clinics ------------------------------------------------------------- The dentists in the state have resolved to install needle destroyers in their clinics and hospitals as a first step towards controlling the problem posed by used syringes. This was decided at the joint workshop organised by the Goa branch of the Indian Dental Association and the Goa Desc Resource Centre, to deliberate the vital issue of controlling bio-medical waste.
The dentists resolved that infected and non-infected waste would be segregated and would be disposed off in different colour coded bags. They have also decided to make a representation to the local body for proper providing proper facility to dispose off bio-medical waste.
The director and joint secretary, department of science, environment and technology, Dr N P S Varde was the chief guest. Dr Varde informed the dentists about various legislations that have been passed by the government and responsibilities that each clinic, hospital or nursing home has towards the safe disposal of bio-medical waste.
He requested all the doctors to register with the Goa State Pollution Control Board and try to find out a solution themselves and not wait for the government authorities.
Ms Deepika D'Souza from the Mumbai Medwaste Action Group gave a detailed presentation as to what medical waste consists of and how it was effectively treated in Mumbai.
A discussion held on mercury being used by dentists to prepare amalgam fillings, which is very toxic and poisonous to the human body and it was decided to minimize the spills and take extra precautions as far as its use is concerned.
Dr Pascal Pinto, in his presentation was very critical in comparing the scenario as far as the waste collection is concerned in the district of Belgaum. Goa which claims to be number one in most aspects is way behind on bio medical waste management, he pointed out.
Dr K V Bengeri, the former chairman of Karnataka State Pollution Control Board in his address assured all the help and support and offered to supply needle destroyers and colour coded bags at very subsidised rates.
The formal function was followed by open house session which was moderated by Mr Roland Martins. The core committee has been constituted with representatives from different cities and villages and it has been resolved to create greater awareness on bio-medical waste.
Earlier, the IDA Goa branch president, Dr Celso Fernandes welcomed and introduced the dignitaries to the gathering. Dr Otilia Fernandes compered the function while Dr Marylene Costa Pereira proposed vote of thanks. ---------------------------------------------- The Navhind Times 27/9/03 page 6 ---------------------------------------------- ======================================= GOA DESC RESOURCE CENTRE Documentation + Education + Solidarity 11 Liberty Apts., Feira Alta, Mapusa, Goa 403 507 Tel: 2252660 mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] website: www.goadesc.org ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Working On Issues Of Development & Democracy =======================================
