GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 05 Oct 2003 STOP ENDORSEMENT CERTIFICATES TO PALMISTS: The State Government has warned its officers to refrain from issuing endorsement certificates to individuals engaged in activities of herbal medicine, palmistry and face reading within the State of Goa. Deeming these activities as illegal and not science based, the government pointed out that such certificates issued by senior government officers are being used to hoodwink the public. The circular has been issued by the government through the Department of Personnel. (H)
STRAY CATTLE MENACE: The stray cattle menace has endangered the lives of commuters. Despite numerous accidents on the national highways, and killing of stray cattle due to reckless driving, no action has been taken by the concerned authorities to safeguard the interest of both. In this regard, The Navhind Times interacted with some of the citizens and solicited their views. Many are of the general opinion that the municipal bodies should create proper infrastructure before the stray cattle are picked up from the streets and confined to a particular place. (Pio Esteves in NT) DABOLIM STALL OWNERS BOOKED: Two cases were booked by the inspector of the Department of Legal Metrology in the premises of the aerodrome at the Dabolim airport against stall owners for putting stickers of Rs.250 instead of Rs.100 on the packages of cashew nuts, Rs.100 instead of Rs.70 on the packages of bebinca and Rs.70 instead of Rs.22 on the packages of biscuits. (WE-GT) RAINFALL TOUCHES ABOVE AVERAGE MARK: At the close of this year's monsoon season, statistics of the Panjim Meteorology Department show that Goa has received above average rainfall after two successive years of dismal rainfall. This year, during the monsoon months of June to September, Panjim has recorded 105 inches of rainfall, five inches above the normal for the season. July recorded the highest amount of rainfall, 111 cm against the normal 92, while both August and September fell short of the normal. (H) MORE SUPPORT FOR PROFIT MAKING KTC ROUTES: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, informed that by next five years, the state government plans spending about Rs 50 crore for the development of Kadamba Transport Corporation (KTC). He said that by March end about 100-250 additional buses would be introduced and there should not be any shortage of buses on those routes which help in obtaining profit. Mr Parrikar was speaking as the chief guest at the 23rd anniversary celebrations of Kadamba Transport Corporation Ltd in Panaji. (NT) ROAD TO BE CLOSED: Beginning from October 6, the stretch of the busy road between PWD office and Nehru stadium at Fatorda will remain closed for traffic for a period of two months. This has been done to facilitate the PWD, sewerage department to lay the missing link in the sewage line and to construct manholes. The total distance between the two points is 700 meters. (H) ORGANIC FARMING BY GUARDIAN ANGEL POLYTECHNIC: Guardian Angel Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology, popularly known as Guardian Angel Polytechnic, will start promoting organic farming in Goa, with the assistance of Rev Fr Inacio Almeida, SFX, a priest from Pilar. Fr Almeida had won the state-level award for the best farmer and is doing a successful enterprise in this field for several years at Bhatlem, Pilar. (WE-GT) GOVT PROPOSES 'KALA GRAM': The government has proposed to set up an 'kala gram' (art village) in the vicinity of Ponda taluka soon and a land acquisition process has been started in this respect. This statement was made by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar while speaking as chief guest at the prize distribution function of All Goa Gumat Aarti Vadan Competition which was held at Kala Mandir, Ponda recently. Malbarrao Sardesai, noted artiste who presided over the function and Shridhar Kamat Bambolkar also spoke on the occasion. (H) 'VAURADDEANCHO IXTT' CELEBRATES 70 YEARS OF EXISTENCE: The Konkani weekly, Vauraddeancho Ixtt, has survived for 70 years because of its strong foundation and it will never die, stated the president of Goa Konkani Academy, Mr Pundalik Naik. Mr Naik was speaking as the chief guest at the 70th anniversary of Vauraddeancho Ixtt at Pilar. Earlier, the annual issue of V Ixtt was released at the hands of the Superior General, Fr Tony Lopes, and the website, www.v-ixtt.com was launched by the Minister for Water Resources, Mr Filipe Neri Rodrigues. (WE-GT) SENIOR CITIZENS VOW: Former chairman of Forum for Senior Citizen, late Abdul Mavany, might have passed away without realising his dream for "dada-dadi and nana-nani" premises inside Agakhan Children's park in Margao, but the senior citizens have vowed to pursue the proposal afresh with the Margao Municipal Council. At its general body meeting held recently, senior citizens voiced a strong protest over what they called "inefficient" ways of the government in meeting their demands. (H) RAIA GIRL MISSING: Maina Curtorim police on Friday registered a missing report following the disappearance of a 22-year-old girl from Raia. Police disclosed that the girl had left her home to proceed to her uncle's place at Karwar. Inquiries, however, revealed that she had not reached Karwar till date, prompting her father to lodge a missing report. According to police, they are investigating whether the girl has eloped with a boy from Kolkata, who was working as a cook in a starred along Salcete's coastal belt. (H) WOMAN, DAUGHTER MISSING: NS Prasanna Kumar, an Army officer, complained to Agassaim police that his wife, Lekha Kumari, disappeared from the military quarters, Bambolim, on Friday morning. This scheme will have two components: Smart Voyager 12 and Smart Voyager 3. (H) KARADI TALES THRILL PRIMARY STUDENTS: In a very attractive package of short and simple English fables, Karadi Tales, a private limited company based in Chennai, has won the hearts of primary school kids in Goa as the government endeavours to bridge the English language gap between the primary and middle school level.It is a unique new approach to learning, written in rhyme and prose and filled with songs and pictures and helps develop a child's listening skills, reading skills, attention span and above all language skills. It may be recalled that, the State Government had announced, in the last session of the Goa Legislative Assembly, its plans of introducing a novel approach towards improving the command over English language of children in primary schools which follow regional language as the medium of instructions. (H) GREATER ROLE FOR WOMEN IN CHURCH: From a greater role for women in the Church, to tackling the community's social evils and helping boost health-care in Goa, Catholics and the wider society are putting demands on their Church to take a more active stance that enables the religion become more relevant to wider society. These were some of the issues that surfaced on Saturday, the first of a two-day seminar on 'The Church in the Evolving Society of Goa', which saw a number of lay voices speak out their aspirations and hopes to the Church hierarchy, which paid an attentive ear to the issues coming up. Priests and clergy took the back-seat, and listened to lay voices at the well-attended meet organised at Old Goa's Pastoral Institute Pius X. (NT) SHWETA SPREADING FRAGRANCE: Shewta Ranade from Caranzalem is a first year student of arts at St Xavier's College, Mapusa. Shewta spends her free time by engaging herself in making perfumes from natural flowers, waterfalls and other creative items. At present Shewta makes 10 to 12 varieties of perfumes besides air freshners. "In the long run I plan to make more varieties of perfumes," she informed.Shweta's got a distinction at the SSC examination while she secured a first class at the HSSC examination. S Suresh Kumar (flyweight), Harpreet Singh (Light heavyweight), V Johnson (Heavyweight, Parvinder Singh (Middleweight), Vijender (light welterweight), Harpal Singh (heavyweight) and Jai Bhagwan Singh (lightweight), scored convincing victories over their fancied rivals to snatch the top honours from right under everyone's nose.
