GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 08 Oct 2003 FOUR DROWN AT COLVA: Three students (Praven Bi, Dilipkumar and Neekesh) in the age group of 13 years and a teacher (Biju), all from Tamil Nadu, met a watery grave in the Arabian waters at Colva beach, while one student (Srikant) was saved by the local fishermen. In the morning between 7 am and 7.30 am, the group (90 higher secondary students, nine teachers and two staff members of Bharatiya Vidya Mandir, Pollachi,) strolled on the beach and about 15 students ventured into the sea. When four of the students started crying for help as they were caught in the under currents, the teacher jumped into the sea to save them and in the bargain got drowned. (GT)
ONE DROWNS AT CALANGUTE: According to the Calangute police a group of 20 tourists from Hubli had come to Margao to attend a conference. In the evening some of them visited Calangute beach and ventured into the sea. Imtihas Ahmed, 35, was caught in the under currents, and died due to drowning. (GT) AWARENESS DRIVE NEED OF THE HOUR: Two red-coloured flags signaling danger stood firmly erected at Colva beach where the drowning incident occurred on Tuesday morning, moments after the four youngsters from Tamil Nadu met a watery grave. Eye-witnesses say that not a single life guard was seen around the beach, nor any danger signals at the time of the incident. (H) TOURISM THINK-TANK AT WORK: For Goa to successfully emerge as a 365-day tourist destination, the term "of season" will have to go off the tourism dictionary, and the State will have to have 'special tourist' bogies, an Events calendar, golf course, convention centre and improvement in the ambience at railway stations and airport coupled with slashing of domestic air fare. These suggestions came up on the second day of the Goa Tourism Meet organised by the GCCI in association with Goa government, TTAG and FICCI. (H) VIGOROUS CAMPAIGN URGED TO BOOST TOURISM: The speakers at the seminar called upon authorities to make consistent efforts with focused attention to promote tourism in the State, making use of available resources and its different culture. Mr Hugh Gantzer, a noted travel writer, said that Goans were the state's unique selling point and that the state should encash on its heritage. Mr Gantzer called upon the tourism industry people not to dilute the unique image that Goan people have earned due to their friendly approach. He said that Goans should not be ashamed of their Portuguese past or descent but use it to promote tourism and derive benefit from it. (NT) GOA-MUMBAI CATAMARAN SERVICE LIKELY: A new catamaran service to link Goa-Mumbai by sea is likely to commence soon. Reliable sources said that Samlink, which is the company interested in stating a service on this route, is working out modalities like the fare structure, timings and other details. (GT) SKYBUS PROJECT TO BE UNVEILED: The skybus technology development project, installed adjacent to the Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd's Margao railway station, would be unveiled on October 15 on the occasion of the 14th foundation day of the Corporation. The KRCL sources stated that though the formal confirmation of Prime Minister, Mr AB Vajpayee's visit to launch this project is yet to come, the Corporation is ready to go ahead with the programme. The company has begun negotiations with Untied States-based M-source who offer transaction processing, accounting and pay roll services based in Bangalore and Pune. Amicus, the insurance and financial services, has conducted research that has shown a growing gulf between customers and companies that outsource. The accused, Sunil Bicholkar, a driver by profession, is presently absconding. (H) COPS CRACK RS.8.5 LAKH THEFT: Police cracked a case of theft of Rs.8.5 lakh in demand drafts and cash from a postal service can. Five persons have been arrested. All the demand drafts and Rs.1.65 lakh in cash have been recovered. Those arrested are: head sorting assistant Vinayak Chinchuwar, mail guard Avinash Kamble, his brother and wife Amardeep and Ujwala, along with coolie Kalappa Maag. (GT) GALGIBAGA RESIDENTS OPPOSE BEACH SHACKS: Over 150 residents of Galgibaga along with the local panch Conceicao D'Costa have strongly opposed permission granted by the Poinguinim panchayat for the proposed beach shacks (Coco Huts) at the Galgibaga beach. The beach is known for its mystical and meditative ambience and is generally regarded as a poet's delight and a philosopher's retreat. The forest department has also marked this beach as a protected area for the endangered Olive Riddley Turtles as a nesting site. (H) TALEIGAO PANCHAYAT ASSESSING DWELLINGS: After bifurcation from the Corporation of the City of Panaji, the Taleigao panchayat has initiated the process of assessing dwellings within its jurisdiction for the purpose of house tax and other taxes. The image of Infant Jesus will be brought down from the altar for the traditional "umo" (kissing of the statue) by the faithful after a ceremonial procession. The tradition has been followed since 1648.
