ORE LOADING AT NEURA OPPOSED: A proposal to set up an iron ore loading plant
at Neura to facilitate transportation of ore from railway to barges, was
opposed by some villagers who expressed fears of environmental degradation
in a virgin tract of cultivable land. The matter dominated the proceedings
at the gram Sabha of the Neura panchayat yesterday. A resolution to oppose
the setting up of the facility, which envisages unloading of ore brought
from Karnataka by rail at Neura to be transferred to barges bound for
Mormugao, was also passed at the gram Sabha. (GT)

GOA: A BANKER'S PARADISE: Goa has the highest proportion of bank account
holders in the country. Compared to 35.5 per cent of Indians, who have their
own bank account, this highly banked small state has 72.8 per cent of its
people having their own accounts, according to Census statistics recently
published. Goa has the fourth-highest proportion of televised household, and
the fourth-largest proportion of households having their own telephones. Goa
ranks third in the proportion of households owning a car, van or jeep. (H)

MOUNT CARMEL CHAPEL CELEBRATES DIWALI: Hundreds of lamps glowed on the
precincts of Mount Carmel Chapel (at Ponda) as members of the Hindu and
Catholic communities mingled freely to celebrate Diwali, marking the start
of a new chapter in communal harmony. Chapel priest Fr Richard D'Silva, who
seemed to put into practice what he preaches, played host to the
precedent-setting even in association with the parishioners as both
communities came together to share the joy of the festival of lights on

TANUJA MURDER: SUSPECTS TAKEN FOR LIE-DETECTOR TEST: Two suspects in the
Tanuja Naik murder case reported at Parampai-Madkai in July last year, were
taken to Hyderabad by the CID/Crime branch police to undergo the
lie-detector test. Police said that Glen Aguiar and his brother Caitan, both
from Madkai, were taken to Hyderabad on Saturday in a bid to obtain a vital
breakthrough with the help of this method. (GT

MARUTI LANDS INTO WATER: A Maruti van yesterday went off the road and fell
into water 15 metres below, near Anderson Marine Pvt Ltd at St Jacinto
Island. No casualties were reported in the incident. (NT)

PWD SEALS PIPELINE AT GOA VELHA: Public Works department officials have
sealed a section of the water supply pipeline at Mascarenhas Vaddo in Goa
Velha, following complaints from consumers of receiving contaminated water.

PIPELINE SINKS INTO GUTTER: While the panic caused by the recent outbreak of
viral hepatitis in the (Panjim) city due to inflow of sewage into tap water
has died down, it appears that there are still some areas where the PWD
could do its bit to eliminate the danger. One such spot is Bhatulem where
the residents have expressed fears of health hazard as the water supply
pipeline passes through the gutters. (GT)

STOLEN PROPERTY RECOVERED: Margao police have recovered all the stolen
property (worth Rs.9.86 lakh), except cash of Rs.42,000 from the suspected
accused arrested in connection with the theft case reported in the postal
department. Police have registered and offence for theft, criminal
conspiracy and concealing of stolen documents and cash against Ujwala
Kamble, Amarsingh Kamble, Avinash Kamble, Kalappa Mang and Vinayak
Chinchawar. (NT)

NEW SCHEME FOR DISCONNECTED PHONES: Under a new scheme introduced by BSNL
recently, a telephone disconnected for non-payment of bill may be
reconnected without payment of the rental for the period from the date of
disconnection. The subscriber, who applies reconnection should pay all the
outstanding dues or should agree to make equal monthly installments before
the telephone is restored. (H)

HERBAL AIDS CURE: Two men from Hyderabad, AM Krishna and CH Bhoomeshwat, who
claim to have invented a herbal cure for HIV/AIDS, have approached the Delhi
High Court to seek direction for constituting a committee to test the
efficacy of their medicine, christened 'Immuno Herbal Sanjeevani'. (PTI

FATHER HELD FOR ABUSING SON: The Mapusa police on Friday arrested a resident
of Bastora on the charge of sexually abusing his 10-year-old son, police
said. The incident occurred on Thursday night when the victim's mother, a
vegetable vendor had gone to Belgaum to make purchases. (GT)

TO COMBAT MOSQUITOES: The Ponda health authorities have urged the Ponda
Municipal Council to undertake immediate steps to combat the mosquito menace
in view of the dengue cases reported there. (GT)

PAEDOPHILIA-A SHAME FOR GOAN SOCIETY: For many years, we were led to believe
that paedophilia is a practice indulged in only by some perverted foreign
tourists. After the notorious Freddy Peats case, which could happen in front
of unsuspecting Goan neighbourhood, this belief was further strengthened.
The Goan paedophiles must be then having a good laugh. They could get away
with their horrendous crimes because of their modus operandi. Domestically
bred Goan paedophiles maintained a low profile. (Nandkumar Kamat in

PEACEFUL SOCIETY MARKS 20 YRS OF EXISTENCE: To mark the 20 years of its
existence the Kundaim based Peaceful Society organised a two-day workshop
recently, to critically review its programmes and define the way forward for
