Friday Balcao the fortnightly discussion event to be held on 31st October will feature the topic, Making Disability Rights a priority in Goa.
As part of a series on public interest issues Friday Balcao will feature a presentation by Mr.Avelino de Sa and Mr. Victor Fernandes President and Secretary of the Disabilty Rights Association of Goa (DRAG).
Many barriers exist in Goa that limit people with disability from being active participants in every day life - basic human rights denied, invisibility in public policy, negative attitudes, inaccessible facilities and transportation systems despite the Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act, 1995 doing away with these barriers.
The Act provides for the prevention and early detection of disabilities, the right to free education, reservation for jobs, affirmative action, non-discriminating steps, research and manpower development, social security and grievance redressal.
Friday Balcao will discuss the various issues and identify possible interventions to share information, resources and network with organisations to make Disability Rights a priority in Goa.

Friday Balcao will be from 4pm to 6pm at the Goa Desc Resource Centre No.11 Liberty Apartments Feira Alta, Mapusa and is open to members of the public.
Those citizens who would like to receive the regular invitation to Friday Balcao and a one page synopsis of the fortnightly session can subscribe for the same by sending Rs.80/- to cover printing and mailing costs.
