Goa Union Of Journalists withdraws agitation TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 29, 2003 10:34:36 PM ]
PANAJI: The Goa Union of Journalists on Wednesday decided to withdraw its agitation launched a month back to protest the notices served to four local dailies by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar.
The Executive Committee of GUJ at its meeting decided to withdraw the agitation after taking the legal opinion of two lawyers on the matter, GUJ President Gurudas Sawal said in a release here.
Notices were served on behalf of Parrikar by his lawyer, Narendra Sawaikar, to the dailies asking them 'to refrain from publishing any material defamatory or otherwise against his Parrikar'.
GUJ took objection to it and launched an agitation demanding withdrawal of the notices.
A delegation led by Sawal met the Chief Minister on October 20 when Parrikar said that as far as he was concerned the issue was 'dead', Sawal said.
An announcement, stating that the issue was considered 'dead', was made in an official release.
The GUJ referred the matter to two advocates and taking note of the legal opinion the Union decided to withdraw the agitation, Sawal said.
