Though it is at the preliminary stage, the government is planning to acquire
some 40,000 sq mt land for the project. This will include reconstruction of
the old Hatkeshwar temple and installation of a huge Lord Ganesh idol,
creation of facilities there for displaying replicas of traditional occupations,
arts and crafts, a small auditorium, bathing facilities for women, restaurant,
etc. Besides plans are also in the offing for the development of a lake,
about 200 metres from this spot.
The plans were announced by the Transport Minister and MLA of Cumbarjua, Pandurang Madkaikar in the presence of the Chairman of Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC), Sadanand Shet Tanavde, managing director of GTDC, Mr Pramod Shetye, chairman of Goa Handicrafts Corporation, Damodar Naik, chief architect (PWD), Mrs Pamnani, and MD of Handicrafts Corporation, Mr Borkar, during a press tour of the site on Tuesday.
The project is being planned jointly by GTDC, Tourism Department and Goa Handicrafts Corporation. Developing Pornem Tirth a new pilgrim centre will promote cruise boating as well.
Plans are afoot to make it a Hindu pilgrim centre. As per plans drawn by a private architect, it will depict a pilgrim complex on the lines of those in Benaras.
Abhijit Sadhale has suggested that only laterite, granite and wood be used for putting up the project. Pornem Tirth can be reached by a cruise boat from Panjim in 45 minutes providing a breath-taking view on both sides of the Mandovi to the visitor.
This concept was proposed some months ago but the go-ahead was received only when the Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar visited the site recently. ------------------------------------------- HERALD 29/10/03 page 1 -------------------------------------------
