Speaking at the launching of a NGO - Zindagi - at Panjim on Tuesday, Mr Arlekar called for better co-ordination and interaction between NGOs, legislators and Goa State AIDS control society (GSACS).
He said on the lines of MPs forum in Delhi to tackle AIDS, Goa should also have one forum of legislators mainly because the AIDS victims are increasing steadily. Stating that he has spoken to the Speaker of Goa Legislative Assembly, Mr Arlekar said that the latter's response has been very positive.
He also stated that as the medicines are very expensive, a plan could be drawn by involving multi-national companies so that they could sponsor the health care of the AIDS patients.
Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar said that one reason for the increase in AIDS cases is ignorance among the people about the disease. Launching Zindagi, he said the attitude of the people need to change towards the AIDS patients. "We need to have a positive attitude towards the patients".
The chief minister said that the government would offer all the necessary support if the NGO works with dedication.
President of Zindagi, Arun Tomar who is suffering from AIDS for the last six years, also spoke. Frankey G Fernandes compered. Mr G V Prabhu proposed a vote of thanks. ------------------------------------- HERALD 29/10/03 page 1 -------------------------------------
