Hi Tony, >From the profiles of the parents in this sad case, not all were irresponsible. There are parents who have to go to work and simply don't know what their teenagers are doing after school. If all one has to do is to work on "character formation" from the cradle, life would be easy, we would have no social deviants etc. In fact, any parent will tell us that 2 children from the same family, given practically the same upbringing can turn out quite differently. There is something that is "inborn nature" which Indians call karma. Personality and chemical/biochemical makeup play a tremendous part in how an individual comes out. Children even have psychological problems that they don't reveal to their parents and teachers, as George Pinto learned from his experiences with his young students. Parenting is not that easy or simple. I remember reading an article in Time magazine about who is likely to succeed Billy Graham, the evangelist. Well, he had prepared his children with a solid Christian upbringing from the cradle. Did all his children turn out to become upstanding "moral" Christian adults? Not at all. The article told about how one of his sons had had a gambling and drinking problem although he is now a reformed person. Makes one humble instead of blaming parents for the behavior of their children.
