GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 11 Dec 2003 IRISH BOY BAND "WESTLIFE" SHOOT ON ASHVEM BEACH: Nicholas Bernard James Adam Bryne was in Goa with Westlife to shoot their latest single "Obvious", slated for release in February next Year. Nicky said, "I love Goa. The beaches are beautiful. I will come here on my second honeymoon." He is married to Irish Premier Berti Aheri's daughter, Georgina. The Irish boy band and Gen X heartthrobs, Westlife, were in Goa on a two-day visit to shoot the video. Westlife is the latest in a series of international artistes, who have chosen to shoot their music videos in the state. American R&B singer Aashanti was recently here to shoot scenes for her song "Goa Groove". (GT)
PAY PARKING IN MAJOR CITIES: Five main cities in the State-Panjim, Margao, Mapusa, Vasco and Ponda-will start pay-parking system for vehicles from January 1. All the five municipalities have identified the parking zones, which will be notified for pay parking soon. (H) WATCH SHOP BURGLED: Burglars made off with several lakhs worth of goods from Haldankar Watch Shop situated behind the Ponda police station on the night of December 9. (GT) CHEATING CASES: The Navelim-Telaulim Service Co-operative Society Ltd has accrued losses of more than Rs.5 lakh by way of interest. Further, the loanee has failed to pay even a single installment either by way of principal mount or the interest. NTSCSL had sanctioned a loan of Rs.48 lakh to Tajudddin Baig of Gogol Housing Board last November to purchase seven trucks. Ironically, all these trucks were already registered in the State on 4 September 2002. (GT) TAXI DRIVE MURDERED: A 23-year-old taxi driver was murdered by three unidentified persons, who stole his vehicle, on a lonely road near the Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary. Bipin Sarkar, a resident of Vasco, was found brutally murdered on the Ganja-Bondla road yesterday. (GT) FOREIGNER HELD: The Anti-Narcotic Police on 11 December conducted raids at two places in Bardez and seized narcotics from two persons including a foreigner. The ANC police arrested Miamo Biayanchi, an Italian national, and recovered 650 grammes of charas from his possession at Assagao. The second raid was conducted at Naikavaddo, Calangute, where the police arrested one Sherenagud Vagalli of Bijapur, and seized 3.102 kg of ganga valued at Rs.31,000. (GT) NEW CORPORATION: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, announced on December 10 that a Scheduled Tribes Corporation will be set up within a month's time. The announcement came at a state-wide youth conference of Gawda, Kunbi, Velip and Dhangar communities-called tribal youth meet--organised by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Parishad at the Gomant Maratha Samaj hall in Panjim. (H) PROBE INTO GU STUDENT'S HARASSMENT: Chancellor of Goa University Governor Kidar Nath Sahani issued an order yesterday directing the University registrar to institute an inquiry into the charges of harassment leveled by a student against faculty members of the Microbiology department. Sharvari Naik has in her statement to the police yesterday, charged that four faculty members harassed her on account of the writ petition filed by her in the Bombay High Court at Panaji. (GT) "WILSON'S DISEASE": The Neurology unit in the department of Medicine of the GMC is investigating the presence of Wilson's disease in the State as they have come across some examples of this disorder in recent years. Wilson's disease is a hereditary disorder in which there is an abnormal accumulation of copper in the body. It was first described in 1912 by an American neurologist, Samuel Alexander Kinnier Wilson. (H) BODY FOUND: The Verna police found the body of Jose Xavier from Velsao, who was reported missing from his residence since the last few days. The body was in a decomposed state. (NT) FREEDOM FIGHTERS CRY FOUL OVER PENSION: Prominent freedom fighters from Goa have urged the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, to reconsider the arbitrary decision sanctioning Swantantra Sainik Sanman Pension to 4000 persons merely on the basis of their presumed participation or dubious willingness to participate in the satyagraha against the Portuguese in Goa in 1954-55. (H) CASE AGAINST SIOLIM SARPANCH: A case of misappropriation and criminal breach of trust has been registered against Siolim-Sodiem Sarpanch Francis Fernandes. Former Sarpanch Dr Jawaharlal Henriques had complained to the Mapusa police alleging misappropriation of panchayat funds to the tune of Rs.2 lakh by Francis Fernandes six months ago. (H) INCLUSION OF TIVIM INTO PDA: The issue of protest against the inclusion of Tivim village under the Panaji Development Authority dominated the proceedings of the gram sabha of Tivim village panchayat held recently. (NT) NEW EDUCATION POLICY PROPOSALS DRAW FLAK: The All Goa Secondary School Teachers' Association, on 9 December condemned the government for suppressing material information on draft proposals for the school education policy in the State. The association resolved to file objection to the proposed irregularities in the draft and also asked for extension of time to 31 January to file objections. (GT) FILM PRODUCERS: The office-bearers of Film Producers Association of Goa yesterday called on the Governor, Mr Kidar Nath Sahani, at Raj Bhavan and informed him about the problems faced by the film producers in the state. (NT) 28.05% PASS: The SSC examination of October 2003 conducted by the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, Alto Betim, recorded a pass percentage of 28.05 per cent. Of the total of 3622 students, who answered their examination, 1016 passed. (GT) COP TAKES BANK FOR A RIDE! A police official attached to the Mapusa police station has been accused of defrauding a bank to the tune of Rs.84,000 by allegedly forging signatures of his immediate superior. Mapusa police has booked a case against ASI Dilip Mahale on charges of defrauding a nationalized bank after furnishing forged documents. (H) WINTER SPECIAL TRAINS: Four winter special trains will ply between Goa and New Delhi, in order to clear the extra rush of passengers this month. These trains will operate between Hazrat Nizamuddin and Margao Railway Station via the Konkan Railway route: Train No.0452 from Nizamuddin on 21 and 28 December, while train No.0451 from Margao on 23 and 30 December. These trains will have 18 coaches including one three-tier AC coach.
