I think that it is the University that issues the degrees with DDS or Doctor of Dental Surgery.
They also have a Masters in Dental Surgery.
The title of Professor for a teacher, has its origins in the Portuguese era. All teachers used
to be addressed as 'Profesor'. I remember my parents addressing their teachers as
'Profesor' -- at least phonetically it sounded as such.

In the US, every Doctor with a basic Medical Degree, equivalent of MBBS in India,
has a title MD. This MD equals Medical Doctor. But, in India, it is higher than a basic
Medical degree(MBBS) and is Doctor of Medicine! MD in India is a much higher degree than
the MD in the US!!

Each country has its own norms. I am pretty sure that no crime is committed in
a Dentist calling himself a Doctor and and a teacher calling himself a Professor!
These are accepted practices and let us not mix UK and Goa!

Now, if a quack wants to practice medicine by calling himself a Doctor, then that is
something different! :-))

It is really a joke that people elavate themselves to the title of professor
when this is totally unwarranted in many institutions in Goa. Similarly, in
Goa, dental surgeons give themselves the title of doctor, which if done in
the UK, would probably lead to a prosecution for misleading patients, and
for attempts to expropriate a recognised title due to those who are genuine
medical practioners and those who have earned a doctorate like a PhD.
However, is this terribly different to many a Goan American who sports the
title of vice-president or senior vice-president when holding down a
fairly mundane job? I know some of these!!
