GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 03 January 2004 GOMANT VISHWA SAMMELAN BEGINS TODAY: Governor Kidar Nath Sahani will inaugurate the three-day convention of "Gomant Vishwa Sammelan" organised by the NRI Facilitation Centre at the Kala Academy hall, Campal-Panaji at 9.15 am today. Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and Union Minister of State for Finance Shripad Naik will be present. The convention will discuss the state of affairs prevailing in the sectors of tourism, education, health care, art and culture, industry and agriculture. The convention will provide a forum for Goans from different parts of the world to voice their grievances. The sole aim of the sammelan is to strengthen the cultural roots of the people of Goa, in the soil of their ancestors. (GT) EXPATS' WOES: Former World Wide Goans president Antonio Coreia Afonso said one of the key concerns of NRIs abroad is that of education for their children in Goa. These are related to admission to schools here, recognition of 'O levels' at the college level in Goa, as well as the problem of 15 years' domicile for admission to professional colleges. These difficulties on the educational front are echoed by Wilson Coelho, the former president of the Goa Welfare Society based in Kuwait. Coelho has found that the level of education is not compatible with that of the West and recommends that the quality of education be upgraded. (H) GOA AND HER EXPATS: From doing almost nothing for them to reach out to its significantly-large proportion of non-residents, the Goa government is gone onto an overdrive. Three days of talks come up on this weekend at the archaically-named Gomant Vishwa Sammelan. In a way, this is a welcome departure from the earlier trend. Questions could, of course, be raised on whether this small region-which for centuries, even in pre-Portuguese times, has been one of South Asia's prominent gateways to the outside world-is adopting the right approach. Whether its intentions are right, and even whether the reach-out-to-the-expats initiative is in the most-apt hands. Only time will tell. (Edit in Herald).
